Stockton Downs Women’s Volleyball in Home Finale

NEWARK, N.J. (October 25, 2016) –
The Rutgers University-Newark women's volleyball team was defeated 3-0 by Stockton University Tuesday night in a New Jersey Athletic Conference contest inside The Golden Dome.
 
Stockton improves to 7-1 in the NJAC and 20-12 overall, while the Scarlet Raiders fall to 3-5 in the league and 14-11 overall. The set scores were 25-16, 25-20 and 25-13.

Despite the loss, Rutgers-Newark is in the NJAC Championship Tournament for the first time since 2006 and its first round opponent will be announced Wednesday morning.
 
Prior to Tuesday's match, Rutgers-Newark honored seniors Tabitha Davis and Kathy Hormaza in what was the final regular-season home match for the talented pairing.
 
Stockton 25, Rutgers-Newark 16
Rutgers-Newark took an early lead, but Stockton was able to take control with a 7-0 rally to open an 11-5 margin and force a Newark timeout.
 
Three kills from junior Morgan Schweitzer helped Newark within four at 14-10, but a solid run from the guests pushed the lead to eight (19-11), and the Ospreys cruised from there for the nine-point opening set win.
 
Davis and Schweitzer led the Scarlet Raiders with three early kills apiece, both hitting over .300 in the process.

A Davis kill helped Newark to an early 4-3 lead, and the two teams would go point-for-point with Davis leading the Scarlet Raiders and senior Idi Uffen leading the Ospreys.
 
Stockton ran off three-straight tallies to open a 12-10 edge, but Newark quickly came back to take the lead (17-15) behind Schweitzer and a sophomore Jess Moy winner. The R-N advantage was short-lived as the Ospreys went on a run to take control, ending the set by scoring 10-of-13 to open a 2-0 lead in the match.
 
Stockton 25, Rutgers-Newark 13
The Ospreys ran off five-straight points at the start of the third set, and led 10-2 after 12. Unfortunately, Newark could never recover from the slow start, falling behind 15-5 after 20 points.
 
R-N did not quit, getting late winners from Schweitzer, Davis and junior Rebecca Ford but it was too little too late as Stockton won the final set, 25-13.
 
Stockton hit .385 in the match, while the Scarlet Raiders converted at a .171 clip. The hosts totaled 38 points, 35 kills, two blocks, 34 assists and 48 digs, while the guests had 46 winners, seven aces, seven blocks, 42 assists and 51 digs.
 
Davis had a very strong performance to lead Rutgers-Newark in her final home match, slamming down 12 kills on the back of a .333 hitting percentage. It marks the fourth-straight match she has scored in double figures. Kopacz had eight kills and Schweitzer had seven, with Ford and Schweitzer each getting two blocks. Kopacz (19) and Hormaza (12) combined for 31 assists, and Schweitzer (15) and junior Sue Riley (12) paced the Raiders with 27 digs.
 
Junior Stephanie Kovacs led Stockton with 12 kills, and junior Jessica Ciandella had 20 assists, two aces and seven digs.
 
Rutgers-Newark will head to King's College in Pennsylvania for matches the College of Saint Elizabeth and King's Saturday afternoon.
