Stockton Bests Women’s Soccer in NJAC Action

GALLOWAY, N.J. (October 8, 2016) – Stockton University bested Rutgers University-Newark by a score of 3-0 Saturday afternoon in a New Jersey Athletic Conference women's soccer game at G. Larry James Stadium.
 
Rutgers-Newark falls to 1-10-2 overall and 0-5-0 in the NJAC, while Stockton improves to 9-3-1 overall and 3-1-1 in the league.
 
The Scarlet Raiders return to the pitch Wednesday night when they host Ramapo College in an NJAC match on Alumni Field. Kick-off is set for 7:30 p.m.
 
Stockton tallied once in the first and twice late in the second to get the win, holding a 20-4 margin in shots, an 8-1 edge in corners and a 13-4 advantage in shots on goal.
 
Rutgers-Newark was credited with 10 saves in the match as junior goalkeeper Diana Carvalho made seven of them.
 
Stockton generated two corners and two shots in the first six minutes of action, and Rutgers-Newark found its way on the stat sheet when an attempt from junior Haley Savva was saved.
 
The Ospreys tallied at 20:08 to go on top 1-0 when junior Lindsey Thomas scored her fifth goal of the season thanks to a cross from senior Adrianna Boucher.
 
Two on-target attempts from junior Nicole Gomez forced the Stockton keeper to make a pair of saves, but the hosts would take that 1-0 lead into intermission. Carvalho made six saves in the first half for Rutgers-Newark as the Scarlet Raiders were outshot 11-3 and out-cornered 4-1.
 
In the early moments of the second half, the Scarlet Raider defense hung tough, keeping the Ospreys off the scoreboard despite three corners and three shots.
 
The Ospreys hit the post at 75:18 and 1:22 later scored to go on top 2-0, putting in one more tally with just 1:11 left in the match. Mairead McKeary punched in the hosts second goal, while Michelle Sander recorded her third goal of the year to close the scoring.
 
R-N's best chance of the second period came from sophomore Juliana Ceballos in the 75th minute, but her shot was saved by sophomore goalie Nicole Pallante who earned her fifth shutout of the season for Stockton.
