HARRISONBURG, Va. (February 13, 2016) - The Rutgers University-Newark men's volleyball team improved to 11-1 overall and 3-1 in the Contintental Volleyball Conference (CVC) with a 3-1 road win at Eastern Mennonite University Saturday afternoon.
The Scarlet Raiders were led by double-digit kills from junior outside
Jack Fredricks (13), senior opposite
Travis Mintzer (12) and senior middle
Cody Chidsey (10), and senior setter
Kevin McCandless dished out a strong 43 assists in the triumph.
After a tough loss at nationally-ranked Stevenson last Saturday, the Scarlet Raiders have ripped off three-straight CVC victories, dropping just one set in the process. Saturday's set scores were 26-24, 20-25, 25-19 and 25-12.
Rutgers-Newark hit .273 in the match and EMU finished at .208, dropping to 2-2 in the conference and 7-6 overall.
Rutgers-Newark 26, EMU 24The Scarlet Raiders took an extremely tight first set, thanks to a kill from Fredricks and an error from EMU. Things were tight from the opening serve as the scoreboard was tied at one, two, three, four, five, six, eight, nine, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, and 17 before a 4-0 run from the hosts made it, 21-18.
Rutgers came back with two-straight points to get within one and a 3-0 rally featuring three kills from Chidsey made it 24-23 Scarlet Raiders to set the stage for the 26-24 set win.
EMU 25, Rutgers-Newark 20The Royals went on top 4-2 early in the second set and used a 3-0 spurt to take an 11-6 lead 17 points in. The edge moved to seven at 23-16, and after three-straight Scarlet points, EMU closed out the second set to tie the match a one all.
Rutgers-Newark 25, EMU 19Facing a hostile crowd after the hosts took the second set, the Scarlet Raiders answered, ripping off five-straight points to start the third. Sophomore outside
Corey Pieper did the serving early, and a kill from Fredricks upped the R-N lead to six at 9-3.
A McCandless kill helped Rutgers to a 14-5 advantage, and the Royals could get no closer than four the rest of the way, giving the Scarlet Raiders a 2-1 lead.
Rutgers-Newark 25, EMU 12Rutgers-Newark flexed it muscle in the third, routing the Royals, 25-12. After Eastern Mennonite went up 1-0, an error opened the door and Peiper served the Raiders to a 4-1 lead. Moments later, the Raiders would go on a 6-0 run to essentially seal the win, getting strong serving from Chidsey and kills from McCandless, Fredricks and Pieper.
The Scarlet Raiders clinched the set and the match by scoring five of the final six points as Kuti had two kills and both Mintzer and senior
Nick Collins had one.
McCandless added three kills and four digs to his 43 assists, with Kuti (six), Fredricks (five) and Chidsey (four) leading the Raider blockers. Senior libero
Quocmy Nguyen had a team-high nine digs, with Fredricks and Pieper each recording seven, and Mintzer finished with three blocks and three digs to go along with his 12 kills (.333). Fredricks' 13 kills came on a .345 hitting percentage, adding seven digs, and Chidsey's 10 hammers came at a .421 clip.
Rutgers-Newark totaled 67 points, 54 kills, two aces, 11 blocks, 49 total assists and 38 digs, with Eastern Mennonite getting 49 kills, 12 blocks, 48 helpers and 38 digs.
Rutgers-Newark will look to make it four-straight wins Wednesday night when it takes on Ramapo College in a non-conference matchup in The Golden Dome Arena. Opening serve is set for 7 p.m.
