STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. (February 20, 2016) - The fifth-ranked Rutgers University-Newark men's volleyball team ran its winning streak to six matches with a pair of 3-0 sweeps Saturday in Staten Island, N.Y.
The Scarlet Raiders made quick work of host College of Staten Island (3-7) in the opener, and dispatched of Rust College (0-6) even quicker in the nightcap. Rutgers-Newark downed the Dolphins by set scores of 25-8, 25-7 and 25-4, and came back to beat Rust, 25-1, 25-4 and 25-4.
On the day, Rutgers-Newark compiled a total of 150 tallies, only allowing 28 against and never allowing either opponent into double digits in a single set.
The Scarlet Raiders are now 14-1 overall, and during the current six-match winning streak they have only dropped one total set while winning 18.
Next up for R-N are two conference home matches - the first coming Friday night at 7 p.m. against Juniata College and the second coming Saturday afternoon against Thiel College.
Rutgers-Newark 3, CSI 0The Scarlet Raiders hit .727 in the opener which was a new season-high, totaling 35 kills and just three errors, notching 58 points, 16 aces, seven blocks, 30 assists and seven digs.

Corey Pieper had eight kills and three aces, and senior setter
Kevin McCandless picked up 24 assists, five kills, five aces and four digs. Senior opposite
Travis Mintzer had eight kills, two blocks and two assists, and junior middle
Nick Kuti tallied two kills, two aces and four total blocks. Sophomore outside
Ricky Crumlish had two kills and three aces, and senior middle
Cody Chidsey had three hammers, two blocks and three aces. Sophomore outside
Francisco Bruno chipped in with three kills and a block and junior outside
Jack Fredricks registered three kills and a pair of scoops.
After CSI opened with the first point of the match, the Scarlet Raiders turned it on, racing out to a 17-5 lead and scoring the final six points for the 25-8 opening-set victory.
The Dolphins scored first in the second and the two teams were tied at three before the Scarlet Raiders closed the set on a 22-4 run to go up 2-0.
In the third, Rutgers scored 10-straight points at one point and notched 16 of the final 17 to earn the sweep as a kill by Bruno and an ace from Kuti sealed the deal.
Rutgers-Newark 3, Rust 0The Scarlet Raiders hit .515 in the match with Rust, only needing 22 kills to earn the 3-0 sweep. R-N's defense held the Bearcats to an attacking percentage of -.370 and zero kills as Rutgers picked up 58 points, 35 aces, one block, 17 assists and 17 digs.

Nick Collins paced the Scarlet Raider attack with six kills and four aces, and veteran
Christopher Kopacz had four kills, three digs and two aces. Freshman
Brendon Frank had three kills, six aces and two digs, and sophomore
Dom Gutowski notched the lone block of the second match and added four aces. Senior libero
Quocmy Nguyen had eight assists, eight aces and two digs, while Pieper had nine aces. Freshman

Marcus Molina had two kills, with freshman
Ammar Rahim picking up a pair of helpers and one dig. Freshman

Pedro Trevino was able to see most of his bench in game action.
The Scarlet Raiders scored the first 22 points in the first set and ripped off the first 15 in the second, before taking a 15-1 margin after 16 points in the third.
