READING, Pa. (April 12, 2016) – Alvernia University built an early lead and never looked back in what ended up being a 13-2 win over Rutgers University-Newark in a non-conference baseball game Tuesday at Angelica Park in Reading.
Rutgers-Newark falls to 11-16 overall and will return to action at New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) rival Ramapo College Thursday at 3:30 p.m. looking to move above .500 in league play for the first time. Alvernia improves to 18-11 with the win.
Alvernia scored multiple runs in the first, second, third and fourth innings, adding one in the fifth to take a 12-0 lead. The 12 scores came on 12 hits, including two home runs – one from first baseman Cameron Cooms and another from center fielder Joe Iacobellis.
Senior first baseman
Cameron Dias doubled to lead off the fourth inning of play, but the Scarlet Raiders could not score until they put up a single marker in the sixth. Sophomore catcher
Ross Halkias doubled and came into score on a single to left from junior left fielder
Josh Cote.
Rutgers-Newark added a run in the eighth as senior center fielder
Ryan MacFarlane singled to start the inning, eventually crossing the plate on a sacrifice fly from pinch hitter
Brian Kokos.
Sophomore
Brian Boulineau led the Scarlet Raider pitching staff, tossing two innings of relief and allowing just one run.
Junior pitcher Ryan Sheekey earned the win on the mound for the Crusaders, going six innings and giving up just one run on five hits.
The Scarlet Raiders finished with two runs on seven hits, getting two knocks from MacFarlane (2-for-4, R) and two from Dias (2-for-3, 2B, R).
Cooms was one of four Alvernia players with multiple hits, going 4-for-4 with a home run, double, two runs scored and four RBI.
