William Paterson Edges Baseball in Extra Innings

WAYNE, N.J. (April 22, 2016) – William Paterson University overcame an 8-2 deficit to tie the score in the eighth inning and scored the game-winner in the 11th to defeat Rutgers University-Newark in a New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) baseball game Friday afternoon in Wayne.

The Scarlet Raiders fall to 12-21 overall and 4-8 in the conference, while the Pioneers improve to 17-15 overall and 6-6 in league play.

Sophomore Rob Eggert singled with one out in the 11th, and eventually scored the winning run on an error after a base hit from senior Jordan Aughey.

Rutgers-Newark tallied 10 hits in the game, getting multiple knocks from four different players. Senior Billy Taylor went 2-for-5 with a double and two runs scored, sophomore Brian Boulineau went 2-for-4 with an RBI and junior Josh Cote went 2-for-5 with an RBI and two runs scored. Senior Ryan MacFarlane – who also was the starting pitcher – was 2-for-5 with a run, and senior Cameron Dias had a hit, a run and two RBI.

Each team scored two runs in the first inning, and the Scarlet Raiders opened an 8-2 lead with six scores in the third.

Taylor led off the game with a double to right-center, and after a sac bunt from Boulineau, Cote singled to drive in Taylor. A single from MacFarlane made it first and third with one out, and Cote scored on a base hit from Dias.

Paterson came back to tie with a pair in the bottom of the first, but Rutgers-Newark scored six runs on just two hits in the third. Cote started the inning with a walk, a MacFarlane single put two runners on with nobody out and a Dias sacrifice fly allowed Cote to cross with the third R-N run of the ball game. MacFarlane came around to score on a wild pitch. Sophomore Justin Marks, sophomore Anthony Perconte and freshman Ryan Zucker all walked to load the bases, and an error by the Paterson first baseman cleared the bases to give Rutgers a 7-2 lead. Taylor would score on a Boulineau single to cap the third inning scoring at six, helping R-N to an 8-2 edge.

William Paterson scored one run in the third, one run in the fifth and four times in the eighth inning to tie the game at eight. Veteran KC Abel and junior Eriq Colon each recorded two-run singles in the eighth for the hosts.

MacFarlane started for the Scarlet Raiders, allowing four runs on nine hits. Taylor was charged with four runs on three hits and three walks in 1.2 innings of work and senior Chris Nichols tossed 1.1 scoreless innings in which he worked around two hits and two walks. Sophomore Anthony Hernandez took the loss, throwing 1.1 innings in relief and giving up an unearned run on two hits.

The Pioneers racked up 16 hits in the game and were led by a 4-for-6, four RBI performance from Colon. Mike Abate and Abel had two hits and two runs apiece, with Abel adding two RBI.

Sophomore Steve Duda pitched seven innings in relief for William Paterson, allowing two runs on four hits, and freshman Eric Rosenberg earned the win, going 1.2 innings.

Rutgers-Newark will visit Montclair State University for a doubleheader on Saturday. First pitch is slated for 11:30 a.m.
