JERSEY CITY, N.J. (April 8, 2016) – Behind a complete-game shutout from freshman hurler
Anthony Rosoline, the Rutgers University-Newark baseball team picked up its first New Jersey Athletic Conference victory of the season Friday, topping New Jersey City University, 3-0.
The Scarlet Raiders improve to 1-2 in the league and 9-14 overall, while NJCU drops to 0-3 in the NJAC and 13-7 overall.
The game lasted just 2:20 minutes as Rosoline went the full nine, scattering eight hits and striking out five. He walked one in earning his sixth win of the season in just seven starts. The first-year Scarlet Raider has been on the mound for six of the team's nine wins this year, pitching at least six innings in every start but one.
Rutgers-Newark totaled five hits in the game, getting two from sophomore
Ross Halkias who went 2-for-4 with an RBI.
After each side could not score for the first five innings, Rutgers-Newark scored all the runs it would need with a two-spot in the sixth.
Senior
Cameron Dias singled to start the inning, and advanced to second when sophomore catcher
Justin Marks was hit by a pitch. Sophomore
Anthony Perconte walked to load the sacs, with a Halkias single plating the first run of the game. Freshman
Ryan Zucker brought in the second run of the inning with a sac fly to give the Scarlet Raiders a 2-0 edge.
The Raiders pushed across an insurance score in the seventh, cashing a lead-off walk and stolen base from senior shortstop
Gerry Patrizio on a Marks groundout.
Rosoline worked around a double in the sixth, and he struck out the final two batters with two men on in the seventh which proved to be his biggest test in locking down his first career complete-game win.
Rutgers-Newark snapped a three-game slide with the victory, also getting a key conference victory in the process. Because of bad weather in the area, the Scarlet Raiders will play NJAC games on Sunday and Monday, battling Rutgers University-Camden in a doubleheader Sunday at Riverfront Stadium beginning at 11:30 a.m. and hosting NJCU for one Monday at 3:30 p.m.
Swipes: Gerry Patrizio (14) and
Ryan MacFarlane (11) – who each had stolen bases Friday – are two of three Scarlet Raiders with double-digit steals.
Billy Taylor (12) is the other as R-N holds a 42-26 in that stat in 2016.
Wow: Justin Marks has thrown out 13-of-26 runners attempting to steal this season.
