NEWARK, N.J. (September 10, 2016) – The Rutgers University-Newark women's soccer team suffered a 1-0 double overtime loss at the hands of Frostburg State University Saturday afternoon on Alumni Field in the first game of the 2016 Scarlet Raider Soccer Classic.
Rutgers-Newark falls to 1-3-0 on the season, while Frostburg evens its record at 2-2-0. The Scarlet Raiders will look to bounce back Sunday at 4 p.m. when they battle Shenandoah University. Shenandoah was topped 2-0 by Swarthmore College in Saturday's second game.
Temperatures soared in Newark on Saturday, reaching nearly 100 degrees on the turf. The two teams and officials decided to take an extra break in the middle of each period for water.
After 100 minutes of scoreless soccer, Frostburg was able to tally the game-winner 1:18 into the second overtime period. Freshman Brooke Shehade was able to control a pass at the top of the box from 40 yards out off the foot of Haley Dalphon. Shehade then held off the defender before chipping her shot up and in.
Both teams struggled to generate chances in the first 45 minutes as the Scarlet Raiders ended the first period with a 6-2 margin in shots. Newark controlled the action to start, and despite only getting off two shots, Frostburg had the upper hand to close the first half.
Each team had a pair of marvelous chances early in the second. Shehade put a bid on target one minute in, and 60 seconds later she broke free, but Scarlet Raider keeper
Diana Carvalho aggressively broke up the play and senior back
Victoria Benet cleared the ball off the goal line to keep the match scoreless.
Rutgers-Newark came back down, generating back-to-back chances four seconds apart. Junior
Haley Savva ripped a shot that banged off the crossbar, and sophomore
Juliana Ceballos' attempt on the rebound went just wide.
Carvalho made a horizontal denial with less than 20 minutes remaining, fully extending to her left to keep a Shehade bid out of the net.
Each team had several late chances with the Bobcats seeing a header clang off the crossbar, but neither team was able to find the back of the net, forcing overtime.
FSU ended the match with a 17-12 margin in shots, a 9-4 edge in shots on goal and a slim 4-3 advantage in corners.
Carvalho made eight saves in a losing effort, and her counterpart Karen Belteton was credited with four in the triumph.
