NEWARK, N.J. (September 15, 2016) – The Rutgers University-Newark women's volleyball team picked up a 3-0 sweep of Farmingdale State College Thursday night in The Golden Dome.
The Scarlet Raiders won by set scores of 25-16, 25-13 and 25-21, improving to 4-2 with the non-conference triumph. FSC drops to 1-3 in defeat.
The Scarlet Raiders finished the match with distinct advantages across the board, hitting .239 overall. R-N ended with 47 points, 34 kills, eight aces, five blocks, 31 assists and 43 digs. The Rams total 36 points, 27 kills, four aces, five blocks, 25 helpers and 42 digs.
Junior
Karolina Kopacz led Rutgers-Newark with a double-double of 13 kills (.455) and 15 assists, and sophomore
Cassie Luken (.333) tallied eight kills, three aces and nine digs. Junior
Sue Riley had a team-high 14 digs, and senior
Kathy Hormaza had 13 assists. Senior
Tabitha Davis pocketed seven kills and two blocks.
Double-Double: Karolina Kopacz now has double-doubles in 4-of-6 matches to start the season. She also has two triple-doubles.
Christina Hickey and Julia Hande combined for 13 kills to lead the guests.
Rutgers-Newark 25, Farmingdale 16
Rutgers-Newark took the upper hand early, opening a 5-2 lead, and after 20 points R-N extended to a 12-8 margin thanks to an ace from sophomore

FSC rallied within two, but behind the serve of freshman
Christina Ko, the Scarlet Raiders ripped off five-straight points to force a Ram timeout trailing 17-10.
A Farmingdale error helped Newark open its largest lead of the set at 20-12, and the hosts eventually closed things out thanks to a kill from sophomore
Jess Moy.
Rutgers-Newark 25, Farmingdale 13
The Rams took an early 6-4 edge thanks in large part to a pair of aces from junior Stephanie Etersque, but Rutgers-Newark responded with a nice 9-2 rally to take a commanding 13-8 lead and force a Farmingdale timeout. A pair of kills for Luken and two Farmingdale errors allowed Newark to take an eight-point edge at 20-12, and Kopacz set Davis for a hammer that upped the margin to 10 (22-12).
Newark would close it out, scoring three of the final four points on the service game of Ko. Rutgers hit .368 in the second after converting at a .344 clip in the first.
Rutgers-Newark 25, Farmingdale 21
Like the second, it was the Rams taking the early 6-4 advantage, and also like the second, Rutgers came right back to take an 8-7 lead.
The Scarlet Raiders pushed the lead to five following a cross-court-hammer from Davis (15-10), but the Rams did not quit, rattling off five-straight to tie the set at 15-all.
A FSC service error and Ko ace slowed the Ram momentum, and a kill from freshman
Epiphani Woodard made the score 18-15 in favor of the Scarlet Raiders.
Back-to-back kills from Kopacz gave Rutgers match point (24-20), with a kill from Luken sealing the 3-0 sweep.
Rutgers-Newark will look for its first NJAC win of the season September 20 when the Scarlet Raiders welcome New Jersey City University to The Golden Dome. Opening serve is slated for 7 p.m.
