Rutgers-Camden Tops Women’s Soccer in NJAC Opener

NEWARK, N.J. (September 17, 2016) – Rutgers University-Camden defeated Rutgers University-Newark by a score of 2-0 in a New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) women's soccer match on Alumni Field in Newark on Saturday.

The Scarlet Raiders fall to 1-5-1 overall and 0-1-0 in the league, while Camden improves to 3-1-2 overall and 1-0-0 in the NJAC.

Rutgers-Newark will look to get back into the win column Monday evening when the Raiders host No. 11 Christopher Newport University in a non-conference contest at 5 p.m. The game is part of Soccer Fest 2016 and all fans in attendance will get a free commemorative t-shirt. Additionally, free pizza will be served to fans that stick around after the game (7:45 p.m.).

It was the Scarlet Raiders getting the better run of play in the opening 10 minutes, but Rutgers-Camden had the best early scoring chance as sophomore Maggie Sande forced Scarlet Raider goalkeeper Diana Carvalho to make a horizontal stop on a shot 13:31 into the match.

Several minutes later, the Raptors took the lead for good when Sande headed in a corner that caromed off the top of the crossbar. It was Sande's second marker of the season.

The Raptors would take the 1-0 margin into the intermission, holding a 6-5 edge in shots and a 4-0 margin in corners at the break.

Carvalho was credited with three saves in the first, as was her counterpart junior Katie Gurba.

Rutgers-Camden pushed the lead to two (2-0) with a score in the 55th minute, and Carvalho made a beauty of a save on a free kick to keep the guests from going up three moments later.

The Scarlet Raiders fought down the stretch, generating three corners, five shots and three shots on goal, but unfortunately were unable to find the back of the net.

Rutgers-Camden finished the match with an 11-10 advantage in shots and a 7-7 margin in shots on goal. Gurba made seven saves, with Carvalho making five denials. The Scarlet Raptors also had a slight 4-3 edge in corner kicks.
