NEWARK, N.J. (September 19, 2016) – The No. 11 Christopher Newport University women's soccer team defeated Rutgers University-Newark by a score of 3-0 Monday night in a non-conference match on Alumni Field.
Despite the loss, the Scarlet Raiders played a solid game and will look to take some momentum into a match at New Jersey Athletic Conference rival Kean University Saturday afternoon.
"I was proud of the way the team competed today," said Head Coach
Ariana Ruela. "Some mental mistakes came back to hurt us and we are not where we want to be yet, but with each game we are getting better and better."
CNU improves to 6-1-0 overall with the victory, while R-N drops to 1-6-0.
The 11th-ranked Captains took an early lead when sophomore midfielder Taylor Hudgins scored thanks to a cross off the foot of freshman Carson Pokorny.
Junior
Nicole Gomez and freshman Iné Collins each took solid shot attempts for the Scarlet Raiders about 10 minutes in, and a Gomez corner in the 16th minute nearly found a friendly foot but CNU goalie Carly Maglio swatted the ball away.
Gomez took a rip from 30-yards out with 11 minutes left in the first half, but her bid at an equalizer missed the crossbar by inches.
CNU extended its lead to two goals with a tally from sophomore Kayla Locklear with 4:33 left in the opening period, and the guests took that lead to the break.
The Captains ended the period with an 8-4 edge in shots and a 2-1 margin in corners.
Back-to-back strong attempts for Newark nearly cut the lead in half six minutes into the second period, and Newport would extend when junior Kimmie Kerstiens converted a penalty kick attempt into her third goal of the season.
Despite facing constant pressure from CNU, the Rutgers-Newark defense hung tough and did an excellent job limiting a potent Newport offense. Goalkeeper
Diana Carvalho, junior
Angelika Barris, senior
Raquel DaCosta, senior
Victoria Benet, junior
Allyson Daly, sophomore
Melissa Chaquea and others all made solid defensive contributions for the Scarlet Raiders.
Carvalho finished the match with five saves, while Maglio finished with four in the win for Newport.
The guests ended Monday's game with an 18-7 margin in shots, an 8-4 advantage in shots on goal and a 4-2 edge in corner kicks.
