UNION, N.J. (September 24, 2016) – The Rutgers University-Newark women's soccer team was defeated by a score of 3-0 Saturday afternoon in a New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) match.

The Scarlet Raiders drop to 1-7-1 overall and 0-2-0 in the NJAC, while Kean moves to 5-4-0 overall and 2-0-0 in the league. Rutgers-Newark will look to get back into the win column Monday night at 8 p.m. when it hosts Brooklyn College in a non-conference match on Alumni Field.

The first shot of the contest did not come until the 14th minute, and the attempt was saved by Scarlet Raider goalie Diana Carvalho. However, the second Cougar shot of the match at 23:46 found the back of the net and gave the Kean a 1-0 lead.

Freshman Shayna Bohus was responsible for the first Rutgers-Newark attempt, firing a shot that was saved by Cougar goalkeeper Lauren Healey.

Kean would take a 2-0 margin into the locker room when senior Allison Coca scored her second goal of the game and second goal of the season in the 37th minute.

Carvalho made four saves in the first 12 minutes of the second half to keep Rutgers-Newark in the match, but the Cougars would tack on two insurance tallies late. Junior Kendall Machak found the back of the net at 77:05, and senior Kayla Birth scored with 5:38 remaining.

The hosts finished with a 17-8 margin in shots, a 12-3 edge in shots on goal and a 5-0 advantage in corner kicks.

Carvalho made eight saves for the Scarlet Raiders, with Healey making three to get the shutout for Kean.
