NEWARK, N.J. (September 19, 2016) – Playing for the first time in 2016 in front of its home crowd, the Rutgers University-Newark men's soccer team earned a 3-0 shutout victory over John Jay College Monday night on Alumni Field.
The Scarlet Raiders – who went 6-2-0 away from their home turf to start the season – improve to 7-2-0 overall and will host Kean University Saturday night in a key early-season New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) showdown. John Jay falls to 1-7-0 with the loss.
Rutgers-Newark scored all three of its goals in the first half, holding possession and field position for 95 percent or more of the period.
Playing in his first match in front of the home crowd, freshman
Fabio De Sousa tallied just 8:10 into the match, taking a feed from senior
Sebastian Gostynski and drilling a shot into the back of the net while moving right-to-left across the box. The tally was his fourth of the season.
At 30:02 the Raiders opened a 2-0 advantage. Gostynski blasted a free kick off the near post, and charging hard for the rebound was junior
Isaiah Kuris who tallied his fourth marker of the season. Gostynski picked up the helper on the play which was his third.
The lead swelled to three (3-0) thanks to a pretty goal from sophomore
Timothy Farias. The second-year scorer took a perfect cross from junior
Chigozie Atubi and found the back of the net for the second time this year. The assist was the first of 2016 for Atubi.
John Jay had one solid chance in the first but the ball was deflected off the crossbar by Scarlet Raider goalkeeper
Andres Medina as the hosts ended the period with a 12-2 margin in shots and a 4-1 advantage in corner kicks.
Rutgers-Newark was able to get a look at some reserves in an extended run in the second half, and though they struggled to score, the Raiders continued to possess the ball and play well. Freshman
Kieran Williams and senior
Jorge Galvez played solid along the back, with freshman
Benjamin Parris and junior
Yannick Ntone creating some solid chances for themselves and others up front.
After freshman goalkeeper
Andres Medina played the opening 45, senior
Elmer Flores came on in goal for the Scarlet Raiders, making one save. Medina was credited with the win and one save as Rutgers-Newark pitched its third shutout in the last four matches. Bloodhound keeper Alexandros Taliotis made seven saves in defeat.
R-N finished the action with a 21-3 advantage in shots, a 10-2 edge in shots on goal and an 11-1 margin in corner kicks.
Saturday's NJAC match against Kean is slated to begin at 7:30 p.m.
