Box Score CANTON, N.Y. (September 2, 2016) – The Rutgers University-Newark women's soccer team dropped its 2016 season-opener Friday afternoon at St. Lawrence University by a 3-0 final.
Rutgers-Newark falls to 0-1 on the young season and will visit Clarkson University Saturday afternoon. St. Lawrence moves to a 1-0.
The Scarlet Raiders were led by junior goalkeeper
Diana Carvalho who made eight saves in goal. Sophomore
Juliana Ceballos (four) and junior
Nicole Gomez (two) led the Raiders in shots, with one from Ceballos forcing a save. Freshman forward
Seray Kurtis took one shot and put it on target for Rutgers-Newark.
"I don't think the final score reflects what we produced on the field, but our mistakes cost us," said head coach
Ariana Ruela. "We are a young team this year, but we will need to be ready to bounce back against Clarkson Saturday."
St. Lawrence controlled the action in the opening 45 minutes of the match, putting four shots on target and out-bidding Newark 12-1 overall.
Ceballos attempted the first R-N shot of the season in the eighth minute, before St. Lawrence went on top 1-0 at 31:09 when junior Katie Stames tallied unassisted.
Carvalho made three saves in the first half to keep Rutgers-Newark within one tally.
Ceballos opened the second half with a shot, and the Scarlet Raiders had a chance after generating a corner at 56:09, but St. Lawrence extended the margin with a counter and goal at 56:30 from junior Hannah Merriam.
Freshman Megan Gannon was responsible for the final margin, knocking in a rebound with 3:12 on the clock.
St. Lawrence finished with a 21-7 margin in shots and an 11-2 edge in shots on goal. Each team took a single corner.
