MONTCLAIR, N.J. (September 22, 2016) – The Rutgers University-Newark women's volleyball team saw its two-match winning streak snapped Thursday at Montclair State University, falling to the Red Hawks by a score of 3-0 in the Panzer Athletic Center.
The set scores were 25-19, 25-16 and 25-14.
The Scarlet Raiders fall to 5-3 overall and 1-2 in the NJAC, while Montclair St. improves to 2-1 in the league and 10-2 overall. R-N heads to Washington, D.C. Friday and Saturday for four matches – two each day – in the Gallaudet Tournament.
Montclair St. 25, Rutgers-Newark 19
The hosts jumped out to an early lead in the first as the Red Hawks scored 5-of-6. Rutgers-Newark came right back and took its first lead at 6-5 thanks to a combo-block from junior
Rebecca Ford and senior
Tabitha Davis.
MSU responded with five-straight to go up 10-6, eventually extending the margin to six (17-11) after a Scarlet Raider error.
Rutgers-Newark battled back to tie the score at 19-all following a solo block from sophomore
Cassie Luken, but the Red Hawks closed the set on a 6-0 spurt to take a 1-0 lead.
Montclair St. 25, Rutgers-Newark 16
In the second set it was all Rutgers-Newark to start as a hammer from Luken gave the guests a 5-2 edge, and a kill from sophomore
Jess Moy made it 8-4.
The Red Hawks would come back quickly, using a 9-0 run to take a 13-8 advantage, closing the set on a 21-8 rally to open a 2-0 margin the match.
Montclair St. 25, Rutgers-Newark 14
The Red Hawks carried over the momentum from the second into the third, opening a 3-1 edge, but the Scarlet Raiders ran off three consecutive tallies to take a 4-3 advantage. A 7-3 period for MSU helped the hosts to a 10-6 margin, and the lead moved to eight at 16-8 soon thereafter.
Back-to-back kills from Luken and Moy helped the Raiders get within six (16-10), but that would be as close as Rutgers-Newark would get, falling in the set 25-14
The Red Hawks ended the match with a 52-30 edge in points and a 39-22 margin in kills. Rutgers-Newark hit .040 on the night, totaling 21 assists, five aces and 52 digs.
Luken led the Raiders with eight kills and five digs, and Davis tallied five hammers and a pair of digs. Junior
Karolina Kopacz picked up 16 assists and nine digs, and junior
Sue Riley had two aces and 14 digs.
