NORTON, Mass. (September 4, 2016) – The Rutgers University-Newark men's soccer team concluded a challenging opening week to the 2016 season with a 1-0 loss at Wheaton College (Mass.) Sunday. The match put a wrap on a three-game in four-day stretch for the Scarlet Raiders who went 2-1 over that span.
The Lyons were able to pick up the win with a goal at 80:11 when junior Amara Sesay registered his second goal of the season when he cut across the front of the net, and pushed through a shot into the right side of the goal.
Wheaton improved to 2-1 overall with the victory, outshooting the Scarlet Raiders 22-19 in a match that stayed scoreless until just 8:49 remained in the contest.

Fabio De Sousa led the Scarlet Raiders with four shots (two on goal), and senior
Sebastian Gostynski put two bids on target and three shots overall. Senior
Hubert Dul also ripped four attempts.

Andres Medina made a career-high nine saves, but took the loss in goal for Newark, while counterpart James Bailey was credited with seven saves to even his personal record at 1-1.
Rutgers-Newark controlled the action early, creating six shots and two corners in the first nine minutes, but Bailey made two stops to keep the Raiders off the board.
De Sousa had an attempt clang off the post less than six minutes after the Wheaton goal, and junior
Carlos Castro's bid with one second remaining was saved by Bailey to seal the win for the Lyons.
Now nearly half way through an eight-match road trip to start the 2016 season, Rutgers-Newark will return to action on Wednesday night at the United States Merchant Marine Academy. After the game in King's Point, Newark will head to Ewing, N.J .for The College of New Jersey Addidas Soccer Classic in which they will square off with nationally-ranked Whitworth University and Keystone College.
