NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. (September 8, 2016) – The Rutgers University-Newark women's volleyball team suffered its first defeat of 2016 Thursday night, falling 3-1 at the College of New Rochelle.
The set scores were 25-18, 25-23, 20-25 and 25-22. The Scarlet Raiders drop to 3-1 on the season, while CNR improves to 2-2. Rutgers-Newark will return to the court Tuesday in The Golden Dome when it hosts Rowan University in the New Jersey Athletic Conference opener for both schools
CNR 25, Rutgers-Newark 18
The two sides traded points early in the first set and after 26 tallies, they were tied 13-all. However, the Blue Angels closed things on a 12-5 run to take a 1-0 lead in the match via the 25-18 set victory.
CNR 25, Rutgers-Newark 23
New Rochelle led 4-2 early and 20-11 late, but Rutgers-Newark used a furious rally, getting within five at 21-16 and within three at 22-19. The Scarlet Raiders even battled within one at 24-23, but CNR did just enough to squeak out the second set win for a 2-0 lead.
Rutgers-Newark 25, CNR 20
Down 8-4 early and with things looking bleak, Rutgers-Newark erupted on a 10-3 spurt to open a 14-11 margin and force a Blue Angel timeout. The break in momentum worked for the hosts as they came back to tie things up at 15, but the Scarlet Raiders ripped off seven-straight points to take a 22-15 margin, eventually closing the set and trimming the deficit to 2-1.
CNR 25, Rutgers-Newark 22
The fourth set saw some back and forth action as the Scarlet Raiders took an early 3-1 lead, and CNR came back quickly to tie things at four. Midway through the set, Rutgers opened a 17-15 margin, extending the edge to three at 20-17, but the hosts rallied behind a boisterous home crowd with a 7-0 run to bring on match point and locked up the win shortly thereafter.
Rutgers-Newark hit .083 in the match, totaling 22 kills, 11 aces, 22 assists and 70 digs. CNR had 42 kills, 20 aces, 42 helpers and 58 digs.
