GLASSBORO, N.J. (January 14, 2017) – Rowan University defeated Rutgers University-Newark Saturday afternoon in a New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) men's basketball game in Glassboro. The final score was 81-67.
Rowan improves to 5-4 in the league and 10-6 overall, while the Scarlet Raiders drop to 4-12 overall and 3-6 in the NJAC. Rutgers-Newark will look to get back in the win column Wednesday night when the Raiders battle the Gothic Knights of New Jersey City University in a conference showdown in The Golden Dome. Tip-off is slated for 8 p.m.

Mark Thomas helped Newark to an early 6-3 lead, and a Thomas layup helped the Scarlet Raiders to a 14-7 margin nine minutes in.
Rowan responded with a big run, outscoring Rutgers-Newark 22-2 to take a 29-16 margin with 57 seconds left in the first half and holding a 31-19 edge at the break.
Newark battled within 11 points (46-35) at 12:16, but the hosts quickly extended back to a comfortable working advantage (17 points, 54-37) and the Raiders were unable to get closer than nine the rest of the way.
R-N shot 41.7 percent from the field, 4-for-14 from three and 13-for-23 at the line, holding a 49-33 margin on the glass. Rowan won the turnover battle (26-13) and held a 38-11 edge in points off the bench.
Thomas poured in 20 points on 8-for-16 shooting, adding six rebounds and two steals, while Barneys had 18 points, five rebounds and two assists. Freshman forward

Nadir Alston had eight points, seven rebounds and a steal.
Rowan had four players in double figures, shooting 38.8 percent from the field, 8-for-28 from deep and 21-for-29 at the line.
