NEWARK, N.J. (October 10, 2017) – Tonight the Rutgers University-Newark women's volleyball team faced off against New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) foe Kean University in The Golden Dome. The Cougars won 3-0 with set scores of 25-8, 25-10, and 25-18 to improve to 19-5 (7-0 NJAC). The Scarlet Raiders fall to 6-10 (1-4 NJAC).
Rutgers-Newark was led by sophomore
Comfort Akinbo who racked up eight kills. Senior
Sue Riley and rookie
Karly Gregoire added four digs apiece while Gregoire orchestrated the offense with 17 assists.
In the first set, the visitors jumped out to a 10-2 advantage. Senior
Morgan Schweitzer got the Scarlet Raiders back on the board with a kill but the Cougars would only expand their lead from there as they cruised to a 25-8 win.
Kean continued its momentum into the second stanza, staking a 15-5 advantage before Rutgers-Newark rallied. The home team notched four consecutive points to cut its deficit to six behind an ace by Gregoire and kill from Akinbo. Still, the Cougars tallied 10 of the next 11 points to take a 25-10 victory and 2-0 lead in the match.
The final set featured 10 ties and 10 lead changes as the two sides battled back-and-forth. The Scarlet Raiders held an edge five times with their last lead coming at 13-12. The final tie of the stanza came at 15-15 before Kean closed the game on 10-3 spurt to earn a 3-0 win for the match.
The Scarlet Raiders continue their NJAC slate on Thursday when they head to Ramapo for a 7 p.m. match.
