No. 6 Men’s Soccer Stays Unbeaten in NJAC, Blanks Ramapo

NEWARK, N.J. (October 11, 2017) – The sixth-ranked Rutgers University-Newark men's soccer team continued its winning ways inside the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) with a 1-0 win over visiting Ramapo College Wednesday night on Alumni Field.

The win is the third-straight for the Scarlet Raiders who improve to 15-1-0 overall and 6-0-0 in the conference. Ramapo gave a strong effort in defeat, but the Roadrunners fall to 7-8-0 overall and 2-4-0 in NJAC play.

Rutgers-Newark will travel to nationally-ranked Rowan University for a big-time league matchup Saturday night at 7 p.m. Both teams are undefeated in conference play and inside the top-15 of both national polls.

The Scarlet Raiders took the lead just 2:31 into the match when sophomore Fabio De Sousa scored his 14th goal of the season. On the play, junior Brandon Goldy lofted a ball into the Roadrunner zone, and senior Hubert Dul chased it down. Dul then beat a defender near the endline, crossed to De Sousa who one-timed a bullet into the lower-right for the score. Dul picked up his team-high sixth assist, and Goldy was the catylyst.

After the Scarlet Raider goal, Ramapo generated several strong chances, but sophomore goalkeeper Andres Medina was able to make a trio of early saves.

Dul nearly found De Sousa for a second, but the latter's shot skipped inches wide of the far post, and seconds later, Dul flicked a no-look-pass to junior Stefano Muniz and his shot just missed near side.

The two teams went end-to-end for much of the half, and Rutgers-Newark took its 1-0 lead into the intermission. Ramapo ended the opening 45 with a 7-5 margin in shots and a 4-1 edge in shots on goal, and Medina made four saves for the Scarlet Raiders.

Junior Breno Lustosa had the best early chance of the second half in the 60th minute, but his rip was denied by senior Ryan Sprague who fully extended to his left for the save.

Rutgers-Newark controlled field position and possession over the next 25 or so minutes of action, holding Ramapo without a shot from the 50:45 mark until 81:01.

Late in the action, freshman Adonis Scotland nearly hustled himself into a chance but Sprague charged out of the box, breaking up the play, and despite picking up a yellow card, he kept his team within one.

From that point, the Scarlet Raider defense did the rest, registering their 11th shutout of the season. Medina finished with four saves in the win, while Sprague had four stops in the loss.

R-N ended the action with a 14-10 margin in shots (9-3 in the second half) and the Raiders held a slim 5-4 lead in shots on target. Rutgers-Newark also took four of the game's five corners.
