Game Recap: Men's Soccer | | Rob Kulish

Men’s Soccer Stays Undefeated at Home, Tops Stevens, 2-0

NEWARK, N.J. (October 17, 2017) – The Rutgers University-Newark men's soccer team – ranked 13th nationally in the latest D3soccer.com poll – stayed undefeated at home with a 2-0 victory over visiting Stevens Institute of Technology Tuesday night on Alumni Field in non-conference action.

Rutgers-Newark improves to 16-2-0 overall and 9-0-0 on its home turf, while Stevens drops to 8-5-2 overall. The Scarlet Raiders have now taken the last three meetings between two of the premier teams in the area and will return to action at New Jersey Athletic Conference foe Montclair State University Saturday afternoon at 12 p.m.

Rutgers-Newark would take the lead for good on the first goal of the season from junior midfielder Breno Lustosa at 29:27. Normally a facilitator, Lustosa found his way on the scoresheet thanks to a pretty feed from junior forward Stefano Muniz. On the play, Muniz carried the ball down to the endline off the left post, sending a pass across the mouth of the goal. Charging in was Lustosa who banged his shot from the right side of the six-yard box into the lower-left corner for the tally which was the second of his career.

The hosts tacked on some insurance 9:20 later on a picture-perfect marker. Sophomore forward Fabio De Sousa controlled 10 yards off the top of the box before splitting a pair of Duck defenders with a through-ball into the left side of the box. Freshman Adonis Scotland chased down the pass and crossed in front to freshman Ariel Parada who put it in the open goal for his fourth marker of the season. Both De Sousa and Scotland pocketed assists on the play for the Scarlet Raiders.

Rutgers-Newark took five of the first six shots in the match and both early corners, scoring both its goals in the mid-to-late moments of the first period. The Scarlet Raider defense once again was suffocating, allowing just four shots to reach keeper Andres Medina. R-N has allowed just three goals against in nine matches on Alumni Field this season, and now has an incredible 12 clean sheets overall.

One of those four saves came late in the game on a penalty kick. Medina extended fully to his right to make the save, and it came just a few minutes after he took a hard hit breaking up a Duck cross.

The Scarlet Raiders finished the match with a 16-8 margin in shots, a 7-4 advantage in shots on goal and a 2-1 lead in corners.

After taking 10 bids in the first half, Rutgers-Newark looked very comfortable playing with the lead, only generating six attempts in the final 45 minutes. On the other side, the defense only allowed Stevens several quality chances outside of the PK with 3:45 on the clock. Amazingly, the last time the two schools played in Newark, Scarlet Raider goalkeeper Matt Broomall made a brilliant save on a penalty kick in what ended up being a 1-0 victory for Rutgers-Newark.
