Riley Gets 2K, Women's Volleyball Cruises Past CSI

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. (October 27, 2017) – Senior Sue Riley capped off a stellar career with a huge milestone, reaching over 2,000 digs and the Rutgers University-Newark women's volleyball team closed out its 2017 season with a second-straight victory at the College of Staten Island, 3-0.

Rutgers-Newark completes 2017 with an 11-15 mark while Staten Island falls to 7-17.

Riley has been a standout libero all four years with the Scarlet Raiders, earning New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) Defensive Player of the Year honors in her rookie season and three All-NJAC Honorable Mention awards. The senior also helped lead her side to postseason ECAC berths in 2014 and 2016. This campaign, Riley set a career-record for digs in a season as she breaks into the exclusive 2,000 dig club.

R-N was led by sophomore Comfort Akinbo and senior Morgan Schweitzer who each poured in 12 kills. Schweitzer made it a double-double when she added 10 digs while Riley had a match-best 14. Four different Scarlet Raiders recorded an ace led by four from rookie Karly Gregoire who orchestrated the offense with 35 assists.

Rutgers-Newark outhit CSI with a 40-24 edge in kills and racked up a fantastic 11 aces.

While CSI came within two points at 21-19, the visitors were able to close out the set with a 25-20 win thanks to three kills from Schweitzer.

A very tightly contested second set featured 10 lead changes as neither team could claim a significant advantage. The biggest run of the game came when R-N broke a 19-19 deadlock with four consecutive points, sparked by an ace from Gregoire and kill by Akinbo. The Dolphins cut their deficit down to one but Akinbo slammed the door shut with a pair of kills to secure a 25-22 win.
