Sue Riley capped off a stellar career with a huge milestone, reaching over 2,000 digs and the Rutgers University-Newark women's volleyball team closed out its 2017 season with a second-straight victory at the College of Staten Island, 3-0.
Rutgers-Newark completes 2017 with an 11-15 mark while Staten Island falls to 7-17.
Riley has been a standout libero all four years with the Scarlet Raiders, earning New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) Defensive Player of the Year honors in her rookie season and three All-NJAC Honorable Mention awards. The senior also helped lead her side to postseason ECAC berths in 2014 and 2016. This campaign, Riley set a career-record for digs in a season as she breaks into the exclusive 2,000 dig club.
R-N was led by sophomore
Comfort Akinbo and senior
Morgan Schweitzer who each poured in 12 kills. Schweitzer made it a double-double when she added 10 digs while Riley had a match-best 14. Four different Scarlet Raiders recorded an ace led by four from rookie
Karly Gregoire who orchestrated the offense with 35 assists.
Rutgers-Newark outhit CSI with a 40-24 edge in kills and racked up a fantastic 11 aces.
Rutgers-Newark 25, Staten Island 20
In the first set, the sides traded the lead four times early in the stanza as momentum swung back-and-forth. Rutgers-Newark took control after going behind 5-4 by winning nine of the next 10 points to claim a 13-6 advantage featuring a pair of kills from Akinbo and a pair of aces by senior
Chrissy Campanelli. While CSI came within two points at 21-19, the visitors were able to close out the set with a 25-20 win thanks to three kills from Schweitzer.
Rutgers-Newark 25, Staten Island 22
A very tightly contested second set featured 10 lead changes as neither team could claim a significant advantage. The biggest run of the game came when R-N broke a 19-19 deadlock with four consecutive points, sparked by an ace from Gregoire and kill by Akinbo. The Dolphins cut their deficit down to one but Akinbo slammed the door shut with a pair of kills to secure a 25-22 win.
Rutgers-Newark 25, Staten Island 13
The Scarlet Raiders raced out to a 10-4 lead in the third stanza bookended by aces from Gregoire and Schweitzer as five different players recorded a kill. R-N would only expand that advantage as it cruised to a 25-13 victory and 3-0 sweep.
