NEWARK, N.J. (October 3, 2017) – Tonight the Rutgers University-Newark women's volleyball team took on New Jersey Athletic Conference rival Rutgers University-Camden in The Golden Dome. The visiting Scarlet Raptors won the match 3-0 (25-12, 25-22, 25-16) to improve to 9-10 (3-2 NJAC) while the Scarlet Raiders fall to 6-6 (1-3 NJAC).
In the opening stanza, Rutgers-Camden jumped out to a 7-2 edge but two kills by junior
Cassie Luken, a spike from senior
Morgan Schweitzer, and an ace by sophomore
Brione Lockett brought Rutgers-Newark within 11-9. Still, the Scarlet Raptors would pull away, taking 14 of the next 17 points to claim a 1-0 lead in the match.
An incredibly tight second set featured 14 ties and 14 lead changes as the sides battled back-and-forth. Luken led R-N with four kills and Schweitzer added three but it wasn't enough as R-C pulled away from a 21-21 deadlock to take a 25-22 victory.
The Scarlet Raptors continued their momentum into the third set, opening up an 11-5 edge. The Scarlet Raiders were able to inch back to within four at 16-12 thanks to a Schweitzer ace and kill. Unfortunately, from that point on the visitors took control winning six of the next seven points to gain a commanding 22-13 lead. Rutgers-Camden closed out the stanza 25-16 to earn the sweep.
Schweitzer and Luken led the offense with six kills apiece while senior
Sue Riley racked up a match-high 15 digs. Rookie
Karly Gregoire added 13 assists.
Rutgers-Newark returns to non-conference action on Thursday when they head to John Jay for a 6 p.m. contest.
