Baseball Routs Albertus Magnus Behind Zibrin Gem

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (March 12, 2017) – Junior hurler Mike Zibrin tossed seven sparkling innings and the offense scored 10 runs on 10 hits as Rutgers University-Newark improved to 4-3 overall with a 10-2 win over Albertus Magnus College Sunday night.

The win was the first for R-N on its Spring Break trip to Myrtle Beach, S.C. Next up for the Raiders will be a matchup with Lancaster Bible on Monday night. First pitch is slated for 6 p.m. Albertus Magnus drops to 0-2 with the loss.

Zibrin gave up just three hits in his seven innings, allowing just one unearned run to improve to 2-0 on the season. He struck out six and walked only one.

Freshmen Brandon Terrizzi and Michael Katims each tossed an inning of relief for the Scarlet Raiders, and Katims struck out a pair of Falcon batters.

Senior Josh Cote, junior Ross Halkias and freshman Connor Clare all had multiple hits to lead the offense. Cote was 2-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI, Halkias went 2-for-3 with two RBI, three runs and a walk, and Clare was 2-for-3 with two runs, two RBI and a walk. Freshman Kevin Tamsula, sophomore Ryan Zucker, freshman Colin Powers, and junior Anthony Perconte all had one hit apiece.

The Scarlet Raiders pushed across two runs in the second, getting an RBI triple from Clare and a run-scoring base hit from Tamsula. A Halkias double in the third brought home Zucker and Cote, and Powers drove in Halkias.

A Cote double in the fourth plated freshman JC Ball to make the score 6-0, and after Albertus Magnus tallied an unearned marker in the sixth, Newark scored four runs in the seventh to lock up the victory.

Zibrin was masterful for Rutgers, sending eight Falcons down in a row in the second, third and fourth innings and facing the minimum (three) in three different frames.

The win for Rutgers-Newark snapped a two-game skid after the Scarlet Raiders started the season 3-1.
