NEW YORK, N.Y. (March 23, 2017) – The ninth-ranked New York University men's volleyball team earned a 3-0 win over Rutgers University-Newark Thursday night in New York City.
It was the first match for the Scarlet Raiders since a March 7 win at Ramapo College, and the loss puts an end to a three-match winning streak for R-N. Rutgers-Newark will bring a record of 9-13 into a key Continental Volleyball Conference (CVC) tri-match Saturday in The Golden Dome against Stevenson University and Alvernia University.
NYU improves to 12-7 with the win.
Thursday's set scores were 25-16, 25-19 and 25-21.

Two kills from junior
Ricky Crumlish to start the match helped the Scarlet Raiders race out to a 3-0 lead, but the hosts responded with a 9-3 run to open a 9-6 margin after 15 points.
A service ace from junior
Justin Sandy followed by an attack error pulled Rutgers within one at 11-10, however seven of the next 11 points went to the Violets, helping NYU to an 18-14 advantage. Later, Newark would trim the lead to three (18-15), but it was not enough as NYU closed out the set.

A kill from junior
Corey Pieper early in the second pushed his team out in front (5-2), with the Violets coming back to tie things 8-8. Sophomore
Brendon Frank delivered a winner to put Rutgers-Newark back on top (10-8), but NYU countered with an 8-2 rally to take the lead for good (16-12).
Trailing 20-14, Newark ripped off a quick 3-0 run on the back of a Crumlish kill and Sandy ace, but 20-17 was as close as the Raiders could get, ultimately falling, 25-19.

It was the Violets who jumped in front in the third set, leading 4-2 after six points, but a Crumlish winner capped a 5-1 run for Rutgers-Newark and gave the guests a 7-5 lead.
Freshman
Jake Connors pushed the Raiders in front later in the set, scoring two kills in a 3-1 surge that gave R-N a 14-11 edge.
Later in the set a 4-0 NYU rally gave the Violets a 17-16 lead, but a Frank service ace put Rutgers-Newark back on top 20-19. From that point, the hosts were able to take control, outscoring Newark 6-1 down the stretch to seal the win.
Rutgers-Newark hit .015 in the match, with a set-best .136 hitting percentage coming in the third. NYU converted at a .230 clip as the Violets totaled 49 points, 34 kills, 10 aces and 31 assists. Rutgers-Newark had 24 points, 17 kills, three aces, four blocks, 16 helpers and 19 digs.
Crumlish picked up a team-high five kills, Sandy had two aces and Frank (three) and junior
Dom Gutowski (two) had multiple blocks. Frank picked up 12 assists, with Crumlish getting three, and Connors totaled a team-high six digs.
