William Paterson Tops Softball in NJAC Pair

Highlights

NEWARK, N.J. (April 9, 2017)
– The Rutgers University-Newark softball team suffered a pair of setbacks Sunday afternoon on Alumni Field at the hands of New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) rival William Paterson University.

The Pioneers won the opener by a score of 8-3, and the guests took the second game, 10-2. Rutgers-Newark falls to 0-6 in the league and 9-13 overall, while the Pioneers move to 6-0 in conference play and 14-6 overall.

Rutgers-Newark will look to get back into the win column Tuesday afternoon when it hosts league foe Ramapo College on Alumni Field. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.

William Paterson 8, Rutgers-Newark 3
The Pioneers bested the Scarlet Raiders in the opener, scoring the final six runs in the game to get the league win.

After William Paterson took a 1-0 lead in the first, Rutgers-Newark responded, tying things when freshman Brittany Kalesse drove in junior Kelly Yusko in the second with a single to center field.

The Pioneers went back in front in the third with a single score, but the Raiders came back with two of their own in the bottom half of the frame to take a 3-2 lead. Rookie Sarah Stiehler, Yusko and junior Kayla Gallo all had hits in the inning, with Gallo picking up an RBI and the Raiders using a pair of Paterson errors to their advantage.

William Paterson scored one run in the fourth inning to tie and four runs in the fifth to take the lead for good. The Pioneers plated their scores in the fifth on three hits and a pair of Rutgers misplays.

The Scarlet Raiders totaled nine hits in the game, getting two apiece from Yusko, Gallo and Kalesse. Gallo and Kalesse had the R-N RBI.

Walizer tossed 5.1 innings over two different appearances in the circle. She gave up eight hits, four runs (three earned) and struck out one. Yusko tossed 1.2 innings and was charged with four runs (one earned) on three hits. The junior took the loss to fall to 6-8 on the season.

Senior Gabrielle Castelli went five solid innings for Paterson, giving up one earned run (three total) on eight hits to improve to 9-1 on the season. Sophomore Christine Griffith led an 11-hit William Paterson offense, going 2-for-4 with three RBI and a run scored.

William Paterson 10, Rutgers-Newark 2 (6 inn.)
The Pioneers tallied twice in the first and never let go of the lead in a 10-2 victory in the nightcap.

Veteran hurler Allison Podmajersky fired a complete-game four hitter to lead William Paterson, and Yusko led the Scarlet Raider offense, going 2-for-2 with an RBI and a walk.

After Paterson scored its two markers in the first, Rutgers-Newark sliced the lead in half with one in the bottom of the inning. Walizer reached on an error to leadoff, and she came around to score on a two-out single up the middle from Yusko.

The two teams traded zeroes in the third and fourth, but the Pioneers scored one in the fourth, four in the fifth and three in the sixth to take a 10-1 edge.

R-N did not quit, getting a two-out triple from freshman Samantha Hoffman and a run-scoring single from Kalesse in the sixth, but it was not enough.

Walizer and Yusko went back-and-forth between the circle and third base with Walizer taking the loss to fall to 3-5. The junior went 2.1 innings and surrendered six runs on nine hits. Yusko tossed 3.2 innings, giving up four runs on seven hits.
