Sue Riley of the Rutgers University-Newark women's volleyball team was named the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) Defensive Player of the Week, it was announced Monday by the league office.
Riley – a three-time all-conference performer – helped lead the Scarlet Raiders to a 2-1 record, beating Pratt and Albertus Magnus but falling to the College of New Rochelle.
Riley tallied 70 digs in 11 sets, compiling an average of 6.36 digs per set. She lifted 32 in the team's win over Albertus Magnus, adding eight assists and two kills in three matches as well. Riley had nine total points, delivering an impressive seven service aces, including five in the 3-1 loss to New Rochelle.
For the year, Riley has played 16-of-16 sets, totaling 119 digs. She leads the NJAC with an incredible 7.44 digs per set which is more than 2.5 better than second place.
As a team, Rutgers-Newark is 2-2 overall. The Scarlet Raiders will begin conference play Tuesday night at Rowan University.
