BRONX, N.Y. (September 14, 2017) - The Rutgers University-Newark women's volleyball team rebounded from a loss at Rowan University with a dominating performance at Lehman College, cruising to a 3-0 win. The Scarlet Raiders even their record at 3-3 while the Lightning drop to 0-8.
R-N controlled the match from the opening point on, winning by set scores of 25-12, 25-11, and 25-6. For the match, the visitors had an excellent .284 attack percentage as they racked up 29 kills.
In the first set, the Scarlet Raiders took the first four points but only led 9-7 as the Lightning fought to stay in the game. Still, the visitors won the next seven consecutive points to break open the set led by a trio of service aces from junior
Cassie Luken. From there, R-N took nine of the last 14 points to earn a 25-12 victory.
The second set saw the Scarlet Raiders turn a 7-4 edge into a significant advantage by going on a 6-0 spurt, closed out by back-to-back aces from senior
Sue Riley. Lehman would get no closer than that as Rutgers-Newark continued to pull away, including a surge that featured an incredible four aces by rookie
Dahlia Shoukry, as R-N took the game 25-11.
Two huge runs in the final set closed out the visitors dominating performance. First, Rutgers-Newark rattled off seven straight points that saw four different players earn a kill to open an 8-1 lead. Then, already ahead 10-4, the Scarlet Raiders reeled off 10 consecutive points featuring a trio of kills by Riley and a pair of spikes from senior
Rebecca Ford. R-N finished off the set, and match, with a 25-6 victory.
Rutgers-Newark was led by Riley who had a match-high eight kills while earning a stellar .467 attack percentage and a match-high 11 digs. Senior
Morgan Schweitzer added seven kills and nine digs while Shoukry contributed an incredible five aces and Luken racked up another four. Rookie
Karly Gregoire guided the offense with a match-best 24 assists.
The Scarlet Raiders return to action on Saturday when they play at the Sage Fall Invitational with matches against Mount Ida College at 1 p.m. and host Sage Colleges at 3 p.m.
