NEWARK, N.J. (September 18, 2017) – Five different players scored goals and the defense recorded its sixth shutout in seven matches as the nationally-ranked No. 6 Rutgers University-Newark men's soccer team improved to 7-0-0 to start the season with a 5-0 triumph over visiting Mount Saint Mary College Monday night on Alumni Field.
The Scarlet Raiders push their regular-season winning streak to 19 matches and the incredible run now spans more than a full calendar year. Next up for Rutgers-Newark is a non-league clash at Albright College Wednesday.

Rutgers-Newark took the lead in the ninth minute with a pretty give-and-go on a corner executed by sophomore
Fabio De Sousa and senior
Chigozie Atubi. De Sousa touched to Atubi who then led De Sousa into the box. De Sousa then touched twice before depositing his fifth goal of the season, and Atubi was credited with his second assist in as many games.
Rutgers-Newark continued to pressure the Knights, but the Scarlet Raiders were unable to separate, just missing on several solid chances.
Mount Saint Mary was able to generate some offense late in the first, getting off three shots, but the hosts remained in control of possession and field position for more than 80 percent of the opening period.
With less than three minutes in the half, junior
Timothy Farias looked to have the Raiders' second goal of the match locked up, but MSMC goalkeeper Jakup Myrtja made a beautiful save and also forced the rebound out of harms way.
Senior
Alex Torres had to early chances in the second, one missed just wide and Myrtja stopped the other bid as the score remained 1-0 in favor of R-N.
Freshman forward
Ariel Parada tallied his third with 32:34 left in regulation, taking a pretty pass from junior
Timothy Farias, seeing his first attempt denied and then punching home the rebound for a 2-0 lead.
Moments later, Torres tallied after Parada slipped him a pass inside the left side of the box. Torres picked up his first goal of the season and the assist was the first of the year for Parada.
Junior
Zachary Gillespie scored his first of the year with 16:52 remaining, chasing down a beautiful long ball from freshman
Kevin Ocampo and beating the Knight goalkeeper nearside. The assist was the first point of Ocampo's career.
R-N's final marker of the night came off the foot of junior
Victor Navas Jr. on a free kick. Navas Jr. stepped up to the ball about 20-yards out, just off the top-right of the box, and he snuck a low tracer inside the near post for his first tally of the year.
Sophomore goalkeeper
Andres Medina earned the win in goal, making one save in 78:36 of action, and freshman
Klaivert Chuquirima came on to close out the clean sheet. Myrtja made five saves for the Knights.
Rutgers-Newark ended the match with a 6-2 margin in corners, a 21-13 edge in shots and an 11-1 advantage in shots on goal.
