JERSEY CITY, N.J. (September 19, 2017) – The Rutgers University-Newark women's volleyball team dropped a down to the wire New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) matchup at New Jersey City University tonight, 3-2. The Scarlet Raiders fall to 4-5 (0-2 NJAC) while the Gothic Knights improve to 4-4 (1-1 NJAC).
After dropping the first set, the visitors rallied in the second in an incredibly long game that featured 12 ties and 12 lead changes. Eventually, R-N emerged victorious, 31-29.
Facing defeat in the fourth set, the Scarlet Raiders rallied to stay in the match. After a timeout, trailing 21-19, the visitors won six of the next seven points, punctuated by a kill from rookie
Karly Gregoire to take the game 25-22.
In the penultimate set, the two sides traded the lead three times and had three ties. Still, Rutgers-Newark trailed 14-11. The visitors made one last rally, winning the next two points, but fell 15-13 in the game and 3-2 for the match.
The Scarlet Raiders were led by senior
Morgan Schweitzer who racked up a team-high 17 kills while junior
Cassie Luken recorded a double-double with 13 kills and 15 digs. Senior
Sue Riley compiled a match-best 27 digs while Gregoire captained the offense with 37 assists.
Rutgers-Newark returns to action on Thursday when they host Montclair State for the NJAC home opener at 7 p.m.
