NEWARK, N.J. (September 23, 2017)
– The Rutgers University-Newark women's soccer team suffered a tough 1-0 loss to Kean University Saturday night in a New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) contest on Alumni Field.

Kean came out strong early, taking a 1-0 lead in the 13th minute, and that single tally held up for the Cougars despite the Scarlet Raiders controlling the ball and field position for just about the entirety of the final 65 minutes of the match.

Rutgers-Newark drops to 6-3-0 overall and 1-1-0 in the NJAC. Kean improves to 7-1-0 overall and 2-0-0 in the league.

The Scarlet Raiders will look to get back into the win column Monday evening when they visit non-conference foe Brooklyn College. Kickoff is slated for 6 p.m.

Senior forward Emily Jurcsek scored on a pretty cross from classmate Kaitlyn Pallitto at 12:42, putting the guests on top by what ended up being the final margin.

The Scarlet Raiders slowly turned the tables, creating chances and ending the first half strong. Kean held a slim 7-6 edge in shots after one, and the Scarlet Raiders took the only two corners of the opening 45 minutes.

In the second half, the ball was constantly deep in the Kean zone, but Rutgers-Newark was unable to find the equalizer it needed. Junior Juliana Ceballos created a number of excellent chances, senior Nicole Gomez had a shot ring off the crossbar and sophomore Iné Collins just missed on several headers.

Rutgers-Newark outshot the Cougars 12-4 in the second half and 18-11 in the match, also doubling up Kean in shots on goal (8-4). The Raiders held a distinct 12-0 advantage in corner kicks.

In the 65th minute, a Collins header just missed after a Gomez corner, and several minutes later, another Collins header looked destined to be a goal, but a Kean defender cleared the attempt off the goal line.

A Ceballos cross with about 15 minutes on the clock, just missed the foot of a sliding Raider in the goalie box, and with 5:15 on the clock, a Gomez blast from the top of the box was tipped off the crossbar by sophomore goalkeeper Casey McDonnell who played a superb game. She made eight saves to earn the win.

Senior Diana Carvalho played the first half for Rutgers-Newark making one save, while sophomore Heidi Paulson made a pair of denials in the final 45.

After Monday's match at Brooklyn, Rutgers-Newark will visit NJAC rival New Jersey City University on Wednesday.
