Game Recap: Men's Soccer | | Adam Schlitt

No. 4 Men's Soccer Cruises to 10th Straight Win

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. (September 25, 2017) – The fourth-ranked Rutgers University-Newark men's soccer team cruised to its 10th consecutive win to open the 2017 campaign, extending its regular season streak to an astounding 22 contests in a row. The Scarlet Raiders dominated this afternoon's contest from beginning to end, defeating the College of Staten Island Dolphins, 5-0.

Rutgers-Newark improves to 10-0-0 while the Dolphins fall to 8-2-0.

Senior Chigozie Atubi started the rout in the 14th minute. Sophomore Fabio De Sousa began the attack by beating two defenders down the left wing and sending in a low cross. Rookie Adrian Velazquez was first to the ball and he unselfishly passed it on to Atubi who finished the movement with a tap in for his fourth score of the season.

In a span of about two minutes, the visitors broke the game wide open. Junior Zachary Gillespie took advantage of a goalkeeping error to rip a shot into the open goal for his third strike of the year almost 32 minutes in. Then, early in the 35th minute, R-N struck again. This time, senior Hubert Dul released junior Bryan Rodrigues who made no mistake, tucking his shot under the goalie for his first of 2017.

After the break, the Scarlet Raiders continued to press. Senior Giuseppe Pollicino scored a wonderful golazo when he fired a strike from 30 yards out that screamed towards the upper 90 and skimmed off the bottom of the crossbar for his first of the season. In the 78th minute, De Sousa rounded out the scoring with a fantastic finish. After freshman Adonis Scotland chipped a ball into the box for De Sousa to run onto, De Sousa finished in style by lifting his shot just over the keeper at the near post for his team-best eighth of the campaign.

Rutgers-Newark held a 26-4 advantage in shots including 11-2 in shots on target while taking six corners to two for the hosts.

In net, sophomore Andres Medina made two saves to earn his sixth shutout of the season.
