JERSEY CITY, N.J. (September 27, 2017) – Sophomore forward
Samantha Richter scored two goals just 57 seconds apart to help lift the Rutgers University-Newark women's soccer team to a 2-1 New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) win at New Jersey City University Wednesday afternoon.
With the win, Rutgers-Newark improves to 8-3-0 overall and 2-1-0 in the NJAC. The Scarlet Raiders will visit nationally-ranked The College of New Jersey Saturday afternoon in another NJAC showdown.
NJCU drops to 2-7-0 overall and 0-3-0 in league play.
The match turned early in the second half when Richter netted her pair less than one minute apart, turning a 0-0 deadlock into a 2-0 Rutgers-Newark lead.
The first tally came at 50:16 when senior
Angelika Barris dribbled down the right wing, beating the defense and crossing to Richter in front for the header. The second came at 51:13 when freshman
Ana Lucia Silveira crossed to Richter who was open inside the six-yard box for the score. The goals were the fifth and sixth of the season for Richter, while Barris picked up her first assist of the year on Richter's first of the match. Lucia Silveira registered her second assist of the season and her seventh point in the last two games on goal number two.
NJCU's Mallensy Vargas pulled the Gothic Knights within one in the 61st first minute, but the Scarlet Raiders went right back to work, generating a pair of corners and two shots on goal over the next two minutes of play.
Overall, Rutgers-Newark attempted eight of the game's final 11 shots and did not allow a corner for the entirety of the second stanza.
The two teams played a scoreless first half with the Scarlet Raiders holding a 12-4 edge in shots and a 2-1 margin in shots on goal. Rutgers-Newark also generated one more corner than NJCU (3-2), controlling the possession and field position for the balance of the opening 45.
About 10 minutes into the match, Scarlet Raider senior
Sabrina Solorzano found herself on a breakaway, but the NJCU defense was able to thwart her chance.
In the 19th minute, senior
Nicole Gomez saw her attempt saved by NJCU's keeper, as did junior
Juliana Ceballos in the 30th minute.
Rutgers-Newark finished the outing with an 8-2 advantage in corners, a 24-9 margin in shots and a 10-2 edge in shots on goal.
Sophomore
Heidi Paulson picked up the win in goal for Rutgers-Newark, making one save in her 90 minutes. NJCU goalkeeper Dominique Jackson made eight denials in the loss.
Rutgers-Newark has a better-than 3-to-1 goal differential this season, scoring 33 times while only allowing 10 goals against. The Scarlet Raiders have allowed one goal or less in nine matches this season, including three-straight outings.
