PATCHOGUE, N.Y. (September 6, 2017) – Senior
Nicole Gomez scored 7:35 into overtime to lift the Rutgers University-Newark women's soccer team to a 2-1 victory over host St. Joseph's College – Long Island Wednesday night.
Gomez was able to put home her team-high third goal of the year, cleaning up a rebound with 2:25 showing on the clock. The chance came via a bid from senior
Sabrina Solorzano who picked up her first assist of the season.
"Tonight was a game that required our team to be mentally tough in the pouring rain against a hard-nosed opponent," Scarlet Raider Head Coach
Ariana Ruela said after the win. "We stepped up to the challenge and dug deep to put it away in overtime. We'll add this as another building block to our foundation this season. Tomorrow we will get back to work, looking to get better."
Rutgers-Newark improves to 2-1-0 on the season, while St. Joe's drops to 0-2-0. The Scarlet Raiders will head to upstate-New York this weekend for a pair of matches, taking on Buffalo State Friday and Baldwin Wallace Saturday.
Despite the tight final, Rutgers-Newark controlled possession and field position for much of the contest, ending the night with a 33-15 margin in shots, putting 17 on target. The Golden Eagles held a 9-4 edge in corners.
St. Joe's goalkeeper Juliana Cintron-Leonardo was under constant pressure, making 15 saves in the loss. Senior
Diana Carvalho made four denials for the Raiders to post her second win of the season.
Rutgers-Newark opened a 1-0 lead at 70:02 when senior
Haley Savva scored her second of the season. On the play, Gomez carried in down the right side before crossing to Savva who one-timed it home.
St. Joe's tied the score in the 82nd minute when Shannon Condron recorded her first of the year, but Gomez and the Scarlet Raiders found the game-winner in OT.
R-N attempted three of the final four shots in regulation and 4-of-6 in OT before Gomez notched the game-ender.
