Women’s Soccer Blanks Buffalo St.; R-N now 3-1-0

BUFFALO, N.Y. (September 8, 2017) – The Rutgers University-Newark women's soccer team rolled to a 3-0 shutout over Buffalo State in the opening game of the Buffalo State Bengals Classic Friday afternoon.

Senior Sabrina Solorzano scored the game-winner in the 28th minute, senior Haley Savva tallied for the third time this season and the Raiders used an own goal to their advantage in their second shutout in four matches this season.

Senior goalkeeper Diana Carvalho picked up the win in goal, playing a shade under 70 minutes, and sophomore Heidi Paulson made one save in 20-plus minutes to close out the combined clean sheet.

The Scarlet Raiders are now 3-1-0 on the season, earning triumphs in their last two road matches. They will square off with Baldwin Wallace University Saturday at 3 p.m. in their tournament finale. Buffalo State – who went to the NCAA Tournament a season ago – drops to 0-2-1.

"Today we showed that we're back and we're hungry," said Head Coach Ariana Ruela after her team's win. "Playing against Buffalo State who had a strong 2016 season, we showed we are eager for more and ready to prove ourselves. We just need to continue to create positive chemistry on the field."

Rutgers-Newark held the Bengals without a shot for the first 14-plus minutes of action, while generating five attempts and two corners on the other end. Despite failing to score, Newark kept the pressure on, and the Scarlet Raiders eventually broke through at 28:11 when Solorzano flicked in a bouncing through-ball for what would be the game-winner. Senior Allyson Daly was credited with the assist – her first of the season. The goal was the third of 2017 for Solorzano and her first game-winner.

R-N would take a 1-0 lead into intermission and 14:04 into the second, an own goal would push the lead to 2-0. Sophomore back Deirdre Mackin crossed the ball into the box, and while in front of the goal, a Bengal defender inadvertently knocked the ball in.

Just 6:16 later, Rutgers-Newark locked down the win, scoring the third and final tally at 65:20. Savva was the goal-scorer, ringing the bell for the third time, and junior Juliana Ceballos was credited with the assist as Savva put in a rebound off of a rip by Ceballos.

The Scarlet Raiders ended with a modest 12-8 edge in shots, but finished the match with a 6-1 advantage in shots on goal. Each side took four corner kicks.

After starting the year with two games in Newark, Rutgers is in the middle of a five-game road swing. The first two contests have ended in Raider wins with the third coming against Baldwin Wallace in Buffalo Saturday afternoon.

Note:
Rutgers-Newark has three wins this season and three different players have scored the game-winning goal in each. Solorzano Friday, senior Nicole Gomez Wednesday and junior Juliana Ceballos on September 1.
