BUFFALO, N.Y. (September 9, 2017) – Junior
Juliana Ceballos scored the game-winner just 1:19 into overtime to lift the Rutgers University-Newark women's soccer team to a 2-1 win over Baldwin Wallace University Saturday afternoon in the second game of the Buffalo State Bengals Classic.
Ceballos scored both Scarlet Raider goals, drawing her squad even in the 71st minute, and pushing them to a victory at 91:19.
Rutgers-Newark improves to 4-1-0 overall, 3-0-0 outside of Newark and 2-1-0 in overtime contests this season. The Yellow Jackets drop to 2-2-0.
R-N will visit Neumann University Wednesday in the fourth of what is a five-match road trip. The non-conference matchup in Pennsylvania is slated for a 7 p.m. kickoff.
"Today's game was all about mind over matter and our team followed through," said Head Coach
Ariana Ruela. "We found a way to dig deep and do the small things right all over the field."
Rachel Bender put Baldwin Wallace on top in the 17th minute, scoring her second goal of the season thanks to an assist from Courtney Schutz.
Rutgers-Newark immediately seemed primed to draw even, generating two shots and two corners in the moments after the Yellow Jacket goal, but the Raiders could not find the back of the net and remained down 1-0. The score stayed the same heading into intermission as the Scarlet Raiders picked up a pair of late saves from senior goalkeeper
Diana Carvalho to stay within one.
Ceballos found the equalizer midway through the second, scoring a penalty-kick goal to tie the game 1-1 in the 71st minute. It was her third marker of the year.
The Scarlet Raiders had two attempts in the minutes that followed – one from Ceballos and one from senior
Sabrina Solorzano – but both just missed, and Carvalho stopped the only late Baldwin Wallace shot on target to send the game into overtime.
Rutgers-Newark wasted little time in scoring the game-winner as Ceballos found the back of the net from 15-yards out. It was her fourth of the season and her second game-winner, and the third-year standout now has a team-high 11 points through five matches. The junior was able to steal the ball form the Yellow Jacket defense and score with her left foot.
The contest was evenly played with Baldwin Wallace holding a 22-21 margin in total shots and the Scarlet Raiders leading 9-8 in shots on goal. The Yellow Jackets held a 5-3 edge in corner kicks. Carvalho made seven saves in her fourth win of the year. She - like the Raiders as a team - is now 4-1-0.
Rutgers-Newark is off to a strong start in 2017, scoring multiple goals in every match it has played after scoring multiple goals in only one contest in 2016. The Scarlet Raiders will face one more non-conference foe in Neumann before opening New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) play at Rutgers University-Camden on September 16.
