NEWARK, N.J. (September 6, 2017) – Three different players scored two goals to propel the eighth-ranked Rutgers University-Newark men's soccer team to a convincing 7-0 triumph over visiting CCNY in a rain-soaked home-opener on Alumni Field Wednesday night.
Freshman
Ariel Parada, senior
Isaiah Kuris and sophomore
Fabio De Sousa all tallied two goals apiece, while senior midfielder
Hubert Dul notched a pair of assists. Kuris led the way with five points for Rutgers-Newark (two goals, one assist), and a total of seven players had at least one point.
R-N improves to 3-0-0 on the season and will host the annual Brick City Classic Saturday and Sunday on Alumni Field. CCNY drops to 0-2-0 on the young season.
Rutgers-Newark put the pressure on early, generating three corners and two shots in the first 150 seconds of action, and R-N took the lead moments later when Parada converted a failed clearance into his first career tally. On the play, Parada was able to take a deflection, beat the keeper and calmly find the back of the net.
The lead moved to 2-0 7:19 into the action when Kuris rang the bell for the first time this season, cleaning up a rebound on a rip from senior midfielder
Hubert Dul. Nearly four minutes later, freshman back
Adrian Velazquez fed Dul with a pretty ball into the box, Dul ripped a shot and Kuris came charging in for his second rebound marker in 3:59 of game time to give R-N a 3-0 lead. Dul was credited with assists on both Kuris scores.
The floodgates opened as the Scarlet Raiders quickly extended to a 6-0 lead. Kuris fed Parada for his second score of the night at 18:14, and De Sousa scored twice – one assisted by sophomore
Jose Barillas – just 14 seconds apart.
Rutgers ended the first half with a 32-0 margin in shots, a 13-0 edge in shots on target and an 8-0 advantage in corners.
The hosts picked up their seventh marker of the match when freshman midfielder
Kelvin Opoku threaded-the-needle with a picture-perfect through-ball into the box, finding classmate
Mohammed Huzien who recorded the first goal of his career. Opoku pocketed his first career assist.
Sophomore goalkeeper
Matt Cabrera earned the win in goal, combining with sophomore
Andres Medina and freshman
Klaivert Chuquirima on the shutout. Rutgers-Newark has yet to allow a goal against this season – 270 minutes.
The three-straight wins to begin the season marks the team's best start since 2011, and R-N has now won 15-straight regular-season matches.
Rutgers-Newark will battle Whitman at 11 a.m. Saturday in the first contest of the Brick City Classic. Fans should visit
