BROOKLYN, N.Y. (September 7, 2017) – The Rutgers-University Newark women's volleyball team dominated Pratt Institute on the road, earning a straight sets victory 3-0.
The Scarlet Raiders even their record at 1-1 early in the 2017 campaign while the Cannoneers fall to 0-2.
The visitors trailed 8-3 early in the first set but R-N settled in and went on an extended 19-3 spurt to flip the momentum and gain a strong 22-14 advantage. Rookie

Cassie Luken added a pair of kills during that stretch as Rutgers-Newark went on to win the set 25-17.
During the second set, the two sides went back-and-forth for the opening points and remained even at 7-7 before the visitors took control. Another kill by Luken kicked off a 6-0 spurt that included two kills from sophomore
Comfort Akinbo that opened up a 13-7 advantage. The Scarlet Raiders would only extend that lead as Akinbo contributed yet another point on the attack and the away side took a second 25-17 victory.
In the final set, yet another Rutgers-Newark competitor took charge as rookie
Samantha Kemmerer picked up two kills and a service ace during a stretch that extended her team's lead from 8-6 to 16-8. The visitors would not relinquish that eight-point advantage for the remainder of the match. Luken would help close out the match as she contributed three more kills to win the set 25-17 and complete the sweep for the Scarlet Raiders.
Rutgers-Newark produced a fantastic .267 attacking percentage in the first period, that set the tone for the entire match, earning nine kills to one error. The visitors would max out with 12 kills in the final set.
The Scarlet Raiders were led by Luken who completed the match with a team-best nine kills. Akinbo added six and a .250 kill percentage as well as four total blocks. Senior
Sue Riley had a match-high 15 digs while Gregoire contributed a game-best 24 assists.
Sophomore Marlena Todd led the Cannoneers with a game-high 12 kills while Todd and rookie Emelen Mikelic shared team-best honors with 12 digs. Freshman setter Alivia Senevoravong added a squad-high 21 assists.
Rutgers-Newark continues their schedule with a tri-match this weekend. The Scarlet Raiders face the College of New Rochelle on Saturday at 11 a.m. in the Golden Dome.
