Late Run Propels Men’s Basketball to NJAC Win at Rutgers-Camden

CAMDEN, N.J. (January 27, 2018) – The Rutgers University-Newark men's basketball team picked up a 66-56 road New Jersey Athletic Conference win at Rutgers University-Camden Saturday afternoon.

The Scarlet Raiders used a 9-0 run in the latter stages of the second half to take control and earn their second-straight conference win on the road. Rutgers-Newark improves 8-11 overall and 4-9 in conference play, while Rutgers-Camden drops to 3-16 overall and 1-12 in the conference. The Scarlet Raiders will battle Ramapo College Wednesday night in The Golden Dome and tip-off is slated for 8 p.m.

Down two with 8:54 left, the Scarlet Raiders turned a 52-50 deficit into a 59-52 lead. Junior forward Mark Thomas started the run with five-straight points and senior guard Erick Loften-Harris ended it with two big free throws with 5:30 left in the game.

Camden would cut the lead to six, but a three-pointer from sophomore guard Barneys and two more foul shots from Loften-Harris gave the guests an 11-point edge with just 3:19 on the clock and the Raiders never looked back.

Thomas had a marvelous all-around game, tallying 12 points, 12 rebounds, seven assists and two steals. Barneys poured in a team-high 16 points to go with five rebounds, and Loften-Harris rang up 12 points, eight rebounds and two steals. Camden hit back-to-back three's to get within three (9-6), but a layup midway through the opening period from Loften-Harris put the Scarlet Raiders back on top by five (15-10).

Four-straight scores from junior guard Emmanuel Kema helped the guests match their largest lead of the first half at 29-20, but the hosts closed the period on a 14-4 run to take a 34-33 lead into the intermission.

The two teams went shot-for-shot early in the second half ahead of the game-changing 9-0 spurt for the Scarlet Raiders.
