MADISON, N.J. (October 16, 2018) – The Rutgers University-Newark women's soccer team suffered a heartbreaking 2-1 defeat in double overtime at non-conference opponent Drew University tonight. The Scarlet Raiders move to 6-8-2 while the Rangers improve to 6-6-3 on the season.
Rutgers-Newark was led by rookie
Jessica Moreno who scored her second goal of the campaign while classmate
Bre Costa picked up her first career point with the assist.
Junior keeper
Heidi Paulson made five saves in the loss and Madison Dudziec had three stops to earn the win.
The Rangers outshot the visitors 13-11 for the contest with a 7-4 edge in attempts on frame. The sides were tied with four corners apiece in a very evenly played match.
The Scarlet Raiders continue their New Jersey Athletic Conference slate on Saturday when they head to Kean University for a 7:30 p.m. game.
R-N earned the first chance of the match for either side when the team won a ball in the midfield and sent sophomore
Samantha Richter down the right flank. Richter managed to reach the touchline, but her cross was blocked out of play to set up a corner in the 8
th minute. The ensuing cross was cleared away from the area, however, Ceballos recovered the ball and struck a shot wide of the net.
The Raiders next opportunity came after a foul by the hosts just outside the 18, positioned perfectly on the left side of the circle, in the 20
th. Although Ceballos was able to really put her foot through the ball, her bid went a few inches above the crossbar.
About eight and a half minutes later, rookie
Jill McCourt was played in behind the defense on the right wing, but with a tough angle and a defender bearing down on her, her one-time shot was corralled by the keeper at the near post.
Drew nearly had a dangerous scoring chance with under two minutes to the break when a corner kick led to a scramble in the box. In the end, the Rutgers-Newark defense got to it first and cleared it out of danger to preserve the 0-0 deadlock headed into halftime.
For the period, the Scarlet Raiders outshot the Rangers 5-2 while the home side held a slight 2-1 edge in corners.
The Rangers got on the board first in the 57
th minute when Kayle Fleming sent a cross in from the right side of the 18 to Leah Dentale who finished the pass off with a right-footed strike from just outside the six-yard box that beat the diving goalie.
Newark attempted to find an equalizer about four minutes later when Ceballos brought a bouncing ball down in the box and fired a left-footed volley, but her shot was deflected and the ensuing corner proved harmless.
The Scarlet Raiders continued to press for a score late in the match as sophomore
Melanie Egas unleashed a bid that was denied by the netminder before Ceballos sent another attempt wide of goal just 30 seconds apart.
Rutgers-Newark finally broke through at 79:24. The visitors worked the ball from left to right with rookie
Bre Costa finding classmate
Jessica Moreno with a square pass. Moreno tried her luck from distance and delivered, blasting a right-footed strike past the keeper and near the left upper-90.
Drew had one last chance in regulation as a nearly catastrophic turnover inside the box created a one-on-one with the goalie, but Paulson came up with a big save as the teams went to extra time.
The Rangers opened the first OT with a flurry of chances however Paulson had a fantastic leaping stop, a corner did not generate an attempt on frame, and Sydney Ziemba fired wide left to leave it tied.
Freshman
Iasia Goeloe nearly ended the contest when she unleashed a strike in the 96
th, but her effort hit the crossbar and would represent the last meaningful chance of the period.
Unfortunately, Drew would find a winner just 32 seconds into the second OT when Sarah Burcaw sent a ball from the right side of the box across the area to Alexis Castanheira who blasted a one-time shot from close range into the net.
