CAMDEN, N.J. (October 6, 2018) – The Rutgers University-Newark men's soccer team suffered a tough loss at New Jersey Athletic Conference rivals Rutgers University-Camden, 2-1, following a thrilling second half. The Scarlet Raiders move to 7-6-1 (2-3-0 NJAC) while the Scarlet Raptors improve to 10-3-1 (4-1-0 NJAC).
R-N outshot the home side for the match 17-13 while the teams were even in attempts on target (7-7) and corners (6-6).
Freshman keeper
Christian Andrach made five saves in defeat and James Brett had six stops in the win.
The Raiders continue their NJAC slate on Wednesday when they head to William Paterson for a 7 p.m. contest.
After a scoreless first half, Rutgers-Camden found a goal out of nothing. Just under two minutes into the second period, Kaito Kitazawa created a bit of space from about 25 yards out and rocketed a right-footed strike off the underside of the crossbar and over the line to make it 1-0.
The Scarlet Raptors doubled their lead in the 67
th minute after the visitors conceded a foul deep on the right wing. Patrick Grudnik stepped over the ball and sent an out-swinging cross into the box. Brian Palangi made the most of a dangerous ball, rising up above his defender to power a header into the right side of the net.
Rutgers-Newark attempted to respond with a pair of chances. Rookie
Pape Taha found a little space on the left side of the box and hit a left-footed shot on the ground but it was corralled by the keeper in the 69
th. About 90 seconds later, classmate
Anthony Oliveira found himself in a very similar position and also tried a left-footed strike that unfortunately met the same fate.
Still, the Scarlet Raiders kept fighting and halved their deficit at 73:45. Following a sharp sequence of passes from the left wing to Oliveira to Taha, Taha played freshman
Franco Catania into the box. However, Catania was taken down from behind to earn a penalty kick for the visitors. Rookie
Joe Alba stepped to the spot and delivered, getting the keeper to go the wrong way before placing his left-footed shot into the left side of the goal for his third score of the season.
Newark's next best chance came in the 81
st after Taha won a free kick on the left side of the semicircle just outside of the box. Alba got the opportunity but this time he sent his bid into the wall before it was cleared out of danger.
The Raiders final chance came with under a minute to play. After working the ball down the left wing, a cross wasn't fully cleared allowing R-N to regain possession. Eventually, a bouncing ball came to sophomore
Lucas Moraes but his right-footed volley from about 20 yards out went harmlessly into the goalie's arms.
