NEWARK, N.J. (November 10, 2018) – This afternoon the Rutgers University-Newark men's soccer team cruised past visiting Maritime College in the first round of the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Division III Championships on Frederick Douglass Field, 5-0. The Scarlet Raiders improve to 10-8-1 as the top-seed in pod 3 while the fourth-seeded Privateers close out their season at 14-6-1.
Rutgers-Newark had a very balanced offense with five different players scoring a goal. Sophomores
Ariel Parada and
Joshua Breton-Jones each had a marker and an assist to lead the squad.
Scarlet Raider freshman keeper
Christian Andrach earned the win with two saves while classmate
Nicholas Linebaugh played the last 11 minutes to complete the shutout. Michael Rodriguez took the loss for the visitors despite making eight stops including a couple big denials 1v1.
In the second match of the day, #3 Manhattanville College defeated #2 Medaille College 2-1 in a hard fought game that saw all three goals come in the second half. The Valiants scored twice before the Mavericks pulled one back at the death.
The Raiders will host Manhattanville with an ECAC semifinal berth on the line at 12 p.m. tomorrow on Frederick Douglass Field.
R-N struck early and did not look back, pouring it on in the second half. Rookie
Davi Alves began the first scoring sequence when he received the ball in space on the right wing and lifted a cross into the box. Parada ran onto the ball and got his head to it but it clanged off the right post. Still, the header took a perfect bounce to freshman
Franco Catania who beautifully smashed his one-time shot past the goalie in the 8
th minute.
That 1-0 advantage would hold until the break as the hosts continued to press but could not add to their lead.
In the second 45, the Raiders took complete control.
Ariel Parada doubled his side's lead at 57:06 after a nice bit of combination play with rookie
Anthony Oliveira. Oliveira played Parada into the box and the sophomore finished well, placing his curling right-footed shot into the right side of the net and out of the reach of the keeper.
Freshman
Ahmed Moawad put the contest out of reach in the 73
rd minute. After a deflected ball found his feet in the box, Moawad held off his defender before ripping a shot on the ground that went diagonally to the bottom left-hand corner.
Breton-Jones made it 4-0 after rookie
Brandon Parada got in behind the defense on the left wing near the touchline. Parada sent a cross into the box for Breton-Jones to run onto. The forward finished beautifully, volleying his shot home off his right foot.
Junior
Jose Barillas put the finishing touches on the match in the 87
th. Barillas combined with Breton-Jones on the left side and found himself with a little space inside the 18. Barillas made no mistake with his opportunity, fizzing a left-footed strike on the ground to the far right corner.
