NEWARK, N.J. (November 18, 2018) – The Rutgers University-Newark men's basketball team pulled away late from Marywood University to take the 2018 John K. Adams Tip-off Tournament Championship game this afternoon in The Golden Dome, 63-52.
The Scarlet Raiders improve to 2-0 on the season while the Pacers fall to 3-2.
In the earlier consolation game, Hunter College defeated Elms College 81-64.
Rutgers-Newark's junior
Chase Barneys earned tournament MVP and an All-Tournament spot while teammate
Mark Isiofia-Thomas, Marywood's Thomas Swarz, Hunter's George Keener, and Elms' Michal Ohradka rounded out the award winners.
Barneys led the Raiders this afternoon with a game-high 22 points, including four 3-pointers, and added six rebounds. Isiofia-Thomas joined him in double-figures with 14 points and recorded a double-double with a game-best 13 rebounds. Senior
Tyler Ofray and sophomore
Quincy Rutherford each contributed 11 points to round out the double-digit scorers.
After a slow start, Newark tried to pull away early. Trailing 5-4, the hosts went on a 13-1 surge featuring six points from Rutherford. Still, the Pacers responded with a 9-1 run of their own to cut their deficit to a manageable 18-15.
The Scarlet Raiders would not concede their advantage but could not regain their double-figure lead and went into the break up 25-19.
In the second half, the visitors continued to battle. A pair of free throws from Donovan Catchings cut the deficit to 49-42 with 3:14 remaining.
That would be as close as the visitors would get however as R-N took control from there. Barneys began the run with a lay-in and trifecta before dishing to Isiofia-Thomas for another triple. Ofray capped the 10-0 surge with a pair of free throws to make it 59-42 with just 1:12 on the clock.
The Raiders salted the game away from there at the charity stripe.
