HOBOKEN, N.J. (November 25, 2018) – The Rutgers University-Newark men's basketball team rebounded from a mid-week loss to take a non-conference road game at Stevens Institute of Technology this afternoon, 75-64. The Scarlet Raiders improve to 3-1 while the Ducks fall to 3-2.
Junior
Chase Barneys continued a great start to his 2018-19 campaign with a game-high 27 points on 9-for-13 (69.2%) shooting from the field in addition to an 8-of-9 (88.9%) performance from the free throw line. Senior
Mark Isiofia-Thomas joined him in double-figures with 15 points while chipping in seven rebounds, two assists, two blocks, and a steal. Classmate
Tyler Ofray added eight points and led the team with 11 boards and six dimes.
The Raiders return to action on Wednesday at 8 p.m. as they resume New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) play in The Golden Dome against Kean University.
Rutgers-Newark nearly led wire-to-wire as the home side's only lead came at 3-2 with 16:13 to play in the opening half. The visitors reeled off a 13-1 run, sparked by back-to-back lay-ins from Isiofia-Thomas, to gain a 15-4 edge that they would not relinquish.
The Raiders largest lead of the first was 20-8 at the 8:00 mark after a lay-up from rookie Tyrone Bowens Jr. off a feed by Barneys but Stevens would fight back.
Trailing 26-15, the Ducks scored seven straight points to make it a four-point contest.
Still, a traditional three-point play by sophomore
Mike Vick pushed his squad's advantage back to seven and R-N would head into the locker room up 34-26.
The Scarlet Raiders opened the second half on an Isiofia-Thomas lay-in and then four points from Barneys to widen their lead to 14. Rutgers-Newark would remain in control from there.
The visitors twice were able to build their lead to 15 points but Stevens did claw back.
The Ducks had their deficit down to seven at both the 8:10 and 7:09 marks in the game.
However, the Raiders had a response every time. Barneys finished a lay-up after a quick outlet from Vick on a made basket with 6:54 to play before Isiofia-Thomas added another bucket in the paint off a pass from Ofray to push the lead back to 11.
The last time Stevens got within single digits was on a freebie with 3:59 on the clock. On this occasion, Ofray came up with the killer basket, draining a shot from beyond the arc with 3:44 to play that all but sealed the contest.
Rutgers-Newark led by double figures the rest of the way as a Barneys free throw capped the scoring at 75-64.
