HACKETTSTOWN, N.J. (December 10, 2018) – The Rutgers University-Newark men's basketball team snapped a three-game skid tonight as the squad traveled to Centenary University and defeated the hosts 72-59 in non-conference action. The Scarlet Raiders improve to 5-4 while the Cyclones drop to 1-9.
Rutgers-Newark featured 12 different players who scored at least two points. Junior
Chase Barneys led his side with 14 points on a very efficient 4-for-5 shooting from the field and a 6-of-7 performance at the free throw line. Senior
Tyler Ofray joined him in double-figures with 12 points. Ofray also shared the team-lead of four assists with sophomore
Mike Vick. Sophomore
Dante Ralph contributed eight points and a squad-high six boards while classmate
Quincy Rutherford added nine points off the bench.
R-N had a strong overall shooting contest, hitting on 48.0% of its attempts from the field (24-for-50) and 84.6% of its attempts from the line (22-of-26).
The Raiders return to New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) play on Wednesday as they stay on the road for an 8 p.m. matchup with Montclair State.
R-N led this contest end-to-end. The visitors scored the first eight points of the game with points from four different players en route to an early 13-2 advantage that was capped by a trifecta from Ofray.
The Scarlet Raiders would lead by as many as 14 in the first half. A freebie from senior
Mark Isiofia-Thomas made it 18-4 and a lay-in by Barneys had Newark in front 20-6 at the 11:18 mark.
The closest Centenary would get for the remained of the period was 20-12 but the Raiders quickly reestablished a double-digit edge on a fastbreak lay-up from rookie
Jamir Patterson.
R-N would not allow its lead to dip below double-figures again and a pair of shots from the charity stripe by Rutherford sent the visitors into the locker rooms with a 35-22 advantage.
The Raiders cruised in the second half, never allowing the Cyclones to get back in the game. Rutgers-Newark opened its first 20-point edge on a traditional three-point play by freshman Tyrone Bowens Jr. with 12:19 to play.
The visitors led by as many as 25 on a Bowens Jr. lay-in with 8:27 on the clock. Still, Centenary outscored Rutgers-Newark 25-13 from there as the hosts cut their final deficit down to 72-59.
