GLASSBORO, N.J. (February 10, 2018) – The Rutgers University-Newark men's basketball team dropped its final road New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) matchup of the season against Rowan University tonight, 89-67. The Scarlet Raiders fall to 8-15 (4-13 NJAC) while the Profs improve to 13-11 (9-8 NJAC).
R-N was led by sophomore
Chase Barneys who poured in a game-high 28 points on 11-of-20 (55.0%) shooting from the field including three shots from beyond the arc and three freebies. He also swiped a team-best three steals. Junior
Tyler Ofray joined him in double-figures with 18 points a three 3-pointers of his own while pulling down six boards and dishing out a squad-high three assists. Senior
Erick Loften-Harris rounded out the double-digit scorers with 10 points and chipped in four caroms, two helpers, and a steal.
The Scarlet Raiders complete their season with Senior Night festivities on Wednesday against TCNJ with tip-off scheduled for 8 p.m.
In the first half, the home team jumped out to a quick 5-0 lead but a pair of Ofray free throws and a Barneys trifecta off a feed from Ofray had the score knotted up a couple minutes later. Trailing 10-7, the visitors grabbed their only lead of the contest after a short rally. Junior
Mark Thomas made a driving lay-up and Loften-Harris netted a lay-in of his own off a Barneys steal to take a slight 11-10 edge.
From there, the Profs would take control reeling off the next 14 points to claim a 24-11 advantage that would prove to be insurmountable. Loften-Harris briefly stopped the bleeding with a jumper but Rowan would not relinquish its lead and headed into the break ahead 35-20.
Down 44-27 early in the second period, the Scarlet Raiders fought to close the gap. Barneys started things off with a lay-up and 3-pointer before rookie
Dante Ralph tipped-in an offensive board. Barneys then capped the 9-2 surge he started with a jumper to get his team within 46-36.
Unfortunately, that's as close as Newark would get. The Profs pulled away from that point on, first using a 15-4 spurt to open up a 61-40 advantage. The home side's lead would only balloon from there, growing to 30 on two occasions, as they closed out an 89-67 win.
