NEWARK, N.J. (February 10, 2018) – The Rutgers University-Newark men's volleyball team extended its winning streak to seven, sweeping a pair of matches in The Golden Dome Saturday to improve to 8-1 overall.
The Scarlet Raiders opened the day by blanking the College of Staten Island (0-4), and they came back to close it with a sweep of the College of Saint Elizabeth (3-8).
During its winning streak, Rutgers-Newark has swept five matches, and it has won 21 of its last 23 sets. The Scarlet Raiders will look to stay hot Wednesday when they hit the road for a non-league meeting with Widener University.
Rutgers-Newark 3, Staten Island 0 (25-14, 25-10, 25-16)
The sixth-straight win for Rutgers-Newark came with relative ease as the Scarlet Raiders swept the Dolphins – their third clean sheet in a row.

Dom Gutowski helped the Scarlet Raiders to a strong start as the hosts scored 4-of-5 to open the match, and a rare winner from freshman setter
Travis Emenaker made the score 8-4 in favor of Rutgers-Newark.
Back-to-back-to-back kills for senior right side
Corey Pieper made it 15-7, and Rutgers-Newark rolled the rest of the set for 1-0 lead (25-14).
Five kills from senior
Jalen Sorrell staked Rutgers-Newark to an early 9-3 advantage in the second set, and the Raiders never looked back, cruising to a 2-0 lead (25-10). Sorrell was unstoppable in the frame, putting away seven kills and delivering an ace to lead the way.
A 5-0 run turned a 6-4 deficit into a 9-6 lead for the Scarlet Raiders and a kill from freshman middle
Nicholas Arce-Cox forced a CSI timeout trailing 12-7. The Dolphins trimmed the lead to three (14-11) moments later, but a 5-0 run featuring kills from freshman

Justin Sandy all-but locked up the win.
Rutgers-Newark totaled 51 points thanks to 45 kills, three aces and three denials, compiling 40 assists and 36 digs. The Raiders hit .352 overall including a .440 mark in the second set, holding the guests to a .012 hitting percentage and just 24 points (24 kills, two blocks).
Sorrell put down nine kills and hit .471, while Sandy (.556) and Pieper (.375) each tallied seven winners. Loesner hit .625 en route to six kills and junior
Brendon Frank had five. Frank lifted a team-high eight digs, with Emanaker (16) and junior
Arnan Romua (23) pacing the passers with 39 assists.
Rutgers-Newark 3, Saint Elizabeth 0 (25-5, 25-9, 25-12)
Gutowski and Romua led Rutgers-Newark to an early lead in the first set, and the Newark margin swelled to eight (9-1) after 10 points. Crumlish put the Scarlet Raiders up 14-4 with a winner and back-to-back bouncers from Sorrell made it 16-4 after 20 tallies.
R-N did not let up, scoring 9-of-10 to take the first set 25-5, clinching it with a Gutowski hammer.
Newark ripped off 5-of-6 to begin the second, and a Pieper kill down the near side made the score 9-2 in favor of Rutgers-Newark. The Raiders continued to dominate, pushing their lead to 10 (15-5) after 20 points, and closing out the set on an ace from freshman
Tuan Nguyen and a CSE error.
Loesner propelled the Scarlet Raiders to another great start in the third, putting down two early kills and teaming with Arce-Cox for a block. Freshman
Rob Long put down a kill to make the score 7-3 Newark, and back-to-back blocks pushed the Rutgers-Newark margin to seven (15-8).
Frank came through with a kill from the back row (19-9), and ahead of two CSE errors to end the match, sophomore libero
Jake Connors picked up a rare kill for good measure.
R-N hit a lofty .514, including .737 in the first set, totaling 59 points on the back of 44 kills, nine aces and six blocks. The Scarlet Raiders totaled 40 assists and 26 digs, holding the Eagles to a -.065 hitting percentage and just 14 points (12 kills, two blocks).
An exceptional 10 different Rutgers players had multiple kills. Gutowski led the way with seven and a perfect 1.000 hitting percentage, and Sorrell had seven winners and a .583 hitting percentage. Pieper added six (.750), and Crumlish (.800), Frank (.429) and Long (.444) picked up four each.

Joseph Breuer all had two aces, while Gutowski and sophomore Miguel O'Connor each lifted a team-high five digs. Long (three) and Arce-Cox each had multiple blocks, and Emenaker (19), Romua (14) and Nguyen (seven) all passed well.
