10 In A Row! Men's Volleyball Cruises Past Cairn

LANGHORNE, Pa. (February 20, 2018) – The Rutgers University-Newark men's volleyball team saw its win streak reach double-digits tonight as the visitors cruised to a 10th consecutive victory over Cairn University in a Continental Volleyball Conference (CVC) matchup, 3-0. The Scarlet Raiders improve to 11-1 and remain an undefeated 4-0 in CVC play while the Highlanders drop to 5-7 (1-5 CVC).

Seniors Jalen Sorrell and Ricky Crumlish led the R-N attack with 10 kills apiece while Sorrell racked up a fantastic .833 hitting percentage. Classmate Dom Gutowski added nine kills and sophomore Jake Connors led the squad with 16 digs. Junior Arnan Romua and rookie Travis Emenaker orchestrated the offense with 20 and 14 assists, respectively.

During this extended winning-streak, the program's longest since a streak of the same length in 2015, Rutgers-Newark has dropped just two sets while outscoring opponents by 330 points.

Head Coach Pedro Trevino said, "I am very proud of the guys for this great accomplishment but we still have a lot of work to do. We are playing very well but still need to work on some things." He added, "We have NJCU at their place and they play well on their court. Then we have Ramapo, Kean, and Juniata at home next week so we will see how good we are."

The Scarlet Raiders stay on the road for a matchup at NJCU on Thursday with a 7 p.m. start.

Rutgers-Newark 25, Cairn 15
The first set featured seven ties and seven lead changes in the early going but the Raiders took over with the score knotted at 9-9. Sparked by a Crumlish spike, the visitors reeled off nine consecutive points to open up a comfortable margin. Crumlish had a pair of kills while Gutowski and senior Corey Pieper each added one during the surge.

Cairn cut its deficit down to seven but Newark scored the final three points of the game, including a block by Sorrell, to take the opening set 25-15.

Rutgers-Newark 26, Cairn 24
The second game featured a similar pattern to the first but this time it remained close throughout as the sides racked up an incredible 13 ties and lead changes.

The see-saw battle went down to the wire with the Highlanders leading as late as 23-21. Still, a clutch kill by Sorrell and ace from Pieper evened things at 23-23.

With the score tied up at 24 apiece, it was Crumlish who made the difference, coming up with back-to-back kills off feeds from Emenaker to close out the set and give R-N a 2-0 lead in the match.

Rutgers-Newark 25, Cairn 15
Even at 3-3 early in the final set, the Scarlet Raiders went on a 6-1 spurt to open up a five point cushion. Pieper started the run with a kill while Sorrell capped it with a pair of spikes to make it 9-4.

Cairn would close within 11-9 but Rutgers-Newark responded yet again with five consecutive points, including three kills by Crumlish, to gain a seven-point edge.

The closest the home team would get from there was 20-14 however the visitors capped the night with a 5-1 surge led by another two Sorrell spikes to take the set 25-15 and match 3-0.
