Baseball Earns Thrilling Extra-Inning Triumph at La Verne

LA VERNE, Calif. (March 13, 2018) – For the second time in three games, the Rutgers University-Newark baseball team earned an extra-inning win. On Tuesday, it came at the University of La Verne as the Scarlet Raiders topped the Leopards 10-8 in 10 innings.

In the 10th, senior Adam Tricarico doubled home sophomore Connor Clare with the game-winning run, and junior Dominic Magliaro came through with a sacrifice fly to plate Tricarico for some insurance. Junior Casey Hanley was able to walk the tightrope in the bottom half, working around two walks and getting a 6-4-3 double play to end the game. Hanley pocketed his first career win, throwing a clutch 1.2 scoreless innings of relief.

Rutgers-Newark improves to 5-4 on the season and will look to make it two-straight wins Wednesday afternoon (3 p.m. PST) at Whittier College. La Verne drops to 9-8 with the loss.

The Scarlet Raiders pounded out 15 hits and five players had two or more. Clare led the way, going 4-for-6 with three RBI and two runs scored. Senior Justin Marks went 3-for-4 with two runs, two RBI and a walk, while Tricarico went 2-for-6 with a run and an RBI. Dominic Magliaro finished 2-for-5 with two RBI and a run, and Luke Magliaro went 2-for-6 with a run and an RBI.

Each team scored a run in the second and two more in the third. R-N's first tally crossed the plate on a Luke Magliaro single, driving in brother Dominic Magliaro who laced a one-out double to left-center.

Marks led off the third inning with a two-bagger, coming into score on a two-out base knock off the bat of Clare. Dominic Magliaro would bring around Clare after a two-out hit from Tricarico.

R-N broke a 3-3 tie in its half of the fourth as back-to-back-to-back two-out walks loaded the bases for Clare who clutchly came through with a two-run single up the middle.

The lead swelled to 7-3 when Marks delivered another two-out run-scoring hit and senior Brian Boulineau was walked with the bases loaded in the fifth.

La Verne scored one run in the sixth to get back within three (7-4), but Scarlet Raider starter Anthony Rosoline was able to avoid further damage with the help of Marks cutting down a potential base stealer for the third out.

Rosoline exited after six solid innings, allowing four runs (three earned) on 10 hits. He walked one and struck out two, pocketing nine groundball outs in what was a strong start for the junior.

The Scarlet Raiders tacked on a run in the seventh when Marks singled home Luke Magliaro who led off the frame with a double. La Verne came back with three runs on two hits, an error, a walk and a hit batter, sending the game to the eighth inning with an 8-7 score in favor of Rutgers-Newark. Neither side scored in the eighth with the hosts pulling even in the ninth to set the stage for a thrilling 10th inning.

The Leopards – like the Scarlet Raiders – finished with 15 hits in the game, getting multiple rips from four different players.
