REDLANDS, Calif. (March 16, 2018) – The Rutgers University-Newark baseball team battled an excellent University of Redlands squad Friday but ended up falling short by a 4-1 final.
Â
Rutgers-Newark drops to 5-6 on the season, while the nationally-ranked Bulldogs improve to a sterling 16-5. Newark returns to the diamond Saturday at the University of La Verne looking to get back to .500.
Â
Scarlet Raider senior starter
Mike Zibrin was excellent for Rutgers-Newark, giving up one earned run – two total – in 5.1 innings of work. The veteran struck out four and walked one, scattering four hits.
Â
Redlands took a 2-0 lead in the sixth, scoring two runs on two hits and one error. Rutgers-Newark responded with one run in the seventh, getting an RBI double from veteran
Ross Halkias after senior
Justin Marks singled to lead off the inning.
Â
Offensively, that would be it for the Scarlet Raiders, and the Bulldogs were able to tack on two insurance scores in the eighth.
Â
Marks and Halkias each had two hits to lead the Rutgers-Newark offense, with Marks scoring one run and Halkias driving in a marker. Junior
Dominic Magliaro accounted for the other Rutgers-Newark hit, and junior
Ryan Zucker drew an impressive three walks.
